Spinning Today (Classical version)

Eclectic listening today so I need to change threads to post the latest LP to hit the platter.

A chance buy as I haven't updated my classical wants list for some considerable time (albeit CDs); I could remember having some Couperin on there but not the exact albums.
Regardless the Harmonia Mundi recordings that I have are always enjoyable so at £2 in excellent condition I am not going to complain.

A new addition to the good ladys' vinyl collection.



Yo-Yo performs the Boccherini in his usual precise yet warm style and the recording would appear to do justice to this.

Quite a bright and lively J.C.Bach offering from Zukerman despite my unfamiliarity with this particular piece.

I do like the works of J.C.Bach and look forward to a couple more listens.

Unfamiliar performers (reading up on them now) but seems competent and engaging so far.

First side of LP 2 and Tenors William Herbert & Richard Lewis deliver a pretty convincing Audi Coelum.

The first LP left me feeling that the performance seemed a little too British but I'm beginning to believe it now.

Beethoven - Symphony No. 5, Kleiber, VPO, DG [cd]

Sometimes, the 5th and only the 5th is the exact perfect piece of music. It has to be the Kleiber, of course.

yep, for pure visceral excitement and power it's difficult to beat Kleiber in LvB's 5th symphony!

Possibly not Gregorian Chant in the purest sense but an excellent CD nonetheless and one of my favourite choral albums.

A superb Tchaik piano trio, probably the best I have heard.

The Shosty is a painfully intense piece, wracked with angst.
But not in this recording! -- it could have been written by Dvorak. Pretty, but pointless, imo.

This afternoon: the first Bliss LP I bought, back in the day - Music for Strings/Meditations on a theme by John Blow - CBSO/Rignold on Lyrita.

Great string playing from the pre-Rattle CBSO. The Meditations always made a big impact on me. You only get to hear Blow's stately theme at the end, and by the time it arrives it seems like an old friend, as the "variations" had thoroughly turned it inside-out in the preceding 25 minutes.

Thanks, Bob - that Bliss Blow job (whoops! ) sounds interesting.
I must confess I don't usually get on with Bliss's music, but with your advocacy and that of an Amazon reviewer, I'll give it a go.
I've just ordered this one.
