Maybe not quite "classical", but:
This was dredged up from a dusty corner not having seen the light for decades . . . turned out to be a lovely pressing, and vintage stereo (a bit ping-pongy in places).
I much prefer Bernstein the composer to Bernstein the conductor. I saw a broadcast (from the Proms maybe?) of him conducting Elgar's Enigma variations. Lots of Bernstein, not a lot of Elgar. By the time we came to "Nimrod" I was ready to chuck something through the telly.

- his DG recording of the Enigma / Nimrod is like that, too. Apparently there was a rebellion by the British orchestra at the recording, but Lennie insisted it should be played his way. He don't 'alf draw it out!
-- I have to say, that I much prefer Lennie the conductor to Lennie the composer!

Inspired by Bob's post, I finally got around to playing this CD (it arrived a few weeks ago!).
Ummm. I have to confess I gave up half way thru the 2nd mvt. It's a very highly rated recording, though.It just seemed too wayward and manipulative to me. Ah well, on to the eBay-pending shelf with it!
The violin concerto with Zino Francescatti, once again. This really is very fine. -- Bernstein as conductor.And he is very good here - but a fair bit younger. Maybe Lennie got more self-obsessed as he got older? I'll have to get hold of his much earlier New York Phil Mahler 5 recording and see if my theory holds water.

Maybe LB started to believe his own hype as he got older and thought he was more important than the composer . . . shades of Karajan (another conductor who leaves me cold more often than not).
I have a quick litmus test for telling what type of conductor's on a recording. If it's HIS picture on the cover rather than the composers, or some other design, then beware: ego at large, and treat with suspicion . . .

I've no problem with the ladies! They need a bit of, er, exposure - like Marin Alsop will get at The Proms . . .What if it's a HER?
That and the fact their egos tend not to be nearly so out of control as the gents.
Marin Alsop was excellent last year at the Festival Hall.
