Hi Phil, that wartime music album is interesting. Is it of music composed during those years or recordings from those years? Who are the pieces by?

Hi Martin. The series "is intended to restore historic justice to figures who were active during the Great Patriotic War (1941-45)".

That disc Vol 12 is all by Orest Yevlakhov. The contents are.

The Night Patrol, a dramatic ballad
The Concerto Suite for Symphonic orchestra

The orchestra is St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra
Olesya Petrova, mezzo-soprano (she's fab)
Alexander Titov, conductor

Titov seems to conduct a lot of the series, which also aims to showcase less known works. This is one of my favourite discs from the series that I've heard so far.

I just wish Northern Flowers would bring them out as a box set.

This is totally yummy - and has been one of the prides of my collection for years.

Astonishingly lifelike recording - a pure voice accompanied by solo lute captured in a nicely reverberant acoustic. Just sublime.



Perhaps the perfect recording of this heartbreaking piece? - so much better than the emotionless Zinman/Upshaw version, imo. I've read that Gorecki hated that famous Upshaw recording, too!

I wouldn't go that far! However, the live performance I attended of it was incredibly powerful and emotional.

Hee hee - perhaps you just heard what was missing in the Upshaw recording!

Opinions vary, of course. And the Upshaw sold zillions of copies and made the piece famous.
--- but perhaps you should try the Naxos.

I've heard quite a few recordings of the piece, but having a look on Amazon and there are loads of recordings I've never come across at all so I certainly can't declare that any I have heard are 'the best', even in just my own opinion! .. but the Naxos is a good'un, and available very cheap here - just over £2 inc UK del.

I've never been able to "get into" Górecki's 3rd.

My only recording is by the Polish State Philharmonic conducted by Jerzy Swoboda, on Decca.

From my charity pile ... 894 is good, but not great. Some very fine moments, but doesn't integrate well into a compleat performance, imo.

784, though - my gosh, he goes for it. A very bold performance indeed with wonderful crashing bass chords - I'll be buying this CD myself, for this sonata.



Another charity CD. I was very much enjoying this collection last night when up pops a post from Alex saying he'd like to buy it. Damn - I thought I was going to keep this one, too!
