Both the artist and the piece were new to me.
At the Manchester Hifi Show yesterday I was in the Brodmann room in front of their extremely handsome VC7 speakers. The Austrian chap asked us all if we were okay to listen to some classical music and put on this...

Well I considered it not only a beautiful piece of music but also an excellent demo.

Mahler 5 - the search for a truly great recording continues. I have over a dozen in my collection, but somehow none are excellent in all ways.
This is surprisingly good, Wit was a very fine conductor --
Shame there isn't a bit more bite to the bass.

Hmm. This may be my fave of those I have heard.
The 1970s sq is a little bit forward and unsubtle, but loads of oomph and definition.
And Levine is a wonderful Mahlerian.
Any suggestions for a great Mahler 5?
(I have Boulez, Abbado (Chicago), Abbado (DVD, Lucerne), Abravanel, Litton (live off radio), Barenboim, Inoue, Zander, Nanut, Morris, Rattle plus the above mentioned two).
