I'm a bit of a sucker for eClassical's bargain "box" downloads, and took a punt recently on the 13 Symphonies of Vagn Holmboe.
What a revelation!
Why do we never hear this music? Why aren't there more recordings of it?
Muscular, cogently argued, exciting, approachable 20th Century music. There's more to Danish music than Nielsen - and given the exposure Holmboe could be as popular as Nielsen, I'm sure.
The recordings are typically BIS in their excellence, and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra play like they've known this music all their lives (which of course, they have).
After getting this music I found this page about Holmboe, and these recordings, so anything I could say has been said much better here . . .

Just back from the concert with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, which was utterly superb! A truly mesmerising and heroic performance. It's always a pleasure going to hear live music, and getting the opportunity to experience the sound of real instruments and a talented orchestra in full flow!
Anyway, the BBC representative was selling some classical CDs, from their discography, so I picked up the following, all performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales:
Frédéric d'Erlanger - violin concerto in D minor. Poeme in D Major. Frederic Cliffe - violin concerto in D minor, with Phillippe Graffin (violin), conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, on Hyperion, from 2010.
Shostakovich (double CD) - Symphonies No5, 6 and 10, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, on BIS, from 1999.
Shostakovich - Symphony No14, with Joan Rodgers (soprano) and John Tomlinson (bass), conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, on BIS, from 2001.
Off to listen to them now!

That was until I listened myself!
Incidentally, all those titles are available directly from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales discography. The Shossy 14th is £12, the double Shossy CD of his 5th, 6th and 10th is £20, and the D'Erlanger/Cliffe violin concertos is £12.
Simply phone the BBC 'call now' line free on: 0800 052 1812. They've got loads of other stuff, too!

Yesterday ....
Rather fine! - defo on the 'keep' pile!
Def the most listenable M-D I have come across - I'm not usually a fan but this got a rave review in Fanfare so I thought I'd give him another go. CD arrived yesterday and I played it twice on the trot. Hmm, the symphony is nearly an hour long and is very interesting, surprisingly not overlong (!), and worthy of further investigation.
The filler is much lighter fare and features a very impressively recorded bass (Irish) drum and Northumbrian pipes - I loved it!
