. . and I'll have to check out the string quartets! I don't know a lot about Martinu. When I used to sing (lip-sync) with the Guildford Phil choir in the 1970s Tod Handley programmed Martinu's "Epic of Gilgamesh". To my shame I can now remember nothing about it, but it did prompt my purchase of the Symphony 3-5 set . . .

The clarinet trio is particularly wonderful.
Also great are the performances of the piano quartets in this set.

Martinu symphonies.
This is a good set - recorded by BIS, so excellent quality, now on Brilliant so nice and cheap!

But this is music very much influenced by the interpreters - it's amazing how different recordings can sound! - so there are other approaches than Jarvi's, but he is a good in a somewhat bold and forthright kind of way, and the sonics are great.
Oh - and it's all marvellous music, btw - and the symphonies are very varied.

Thanks for the Martinu link, Jerry.
I bought Brilliant's Prokofiev Symphonies set a while back which were Decca recordings. Fantastic value for great quality recordings.
Edit: Brilliant Classics website has some really interesting releases - this one, of Shostakovich Choral Music, looks well worth seeking out . . .

Schubert - Symphonies 5 & 6 - bliss!
Wagner - Gotterdammerung, Solti, VPO, Decca [cd]
This is the only recording I have, primarily for the Funeral March. Can anyone suggest a more up to date, but still orgasmic, version? I must say the dynamics on the Decca recording are knockout but the perspective very flattened.
No-one? Oh well, I'm looking at the Maazel / BPO / Telarc Ring orchestral highlights as a possible purchase.
