Thanks for the answer, I still do not fully understand the logic, but this is not the thread for any further discussion, I will have to find out more.

    Thanks again

    Yes! (sort of)

I once had an amp that I could physically unplug from the mains and it would still play for about ten seconds (at lowish volumes) before any effect could be heard. Quite a neat trick I thought at the time.

Your basic assumption is wrong. No amp is going to demand anything like 13A continuous. However, many big power amps can deliver some 60-100A peak on transients into the speakers, which translates into a serious peak current demand from your AC - for very short lengths of time. Anything that impedes that demand - thin or inductive cables, poor fuses - will limit the dynamic capability of the amplifier.
I think Martin's explanation sums things up pretty good as far as the reasoning behind removing as many bottlenecks in the chain' to ensure maximum current capability necessary for instant transient response etc, although it must be stressed that certain equipment will benefit more than others from this application etc. This is one of the many reasons why mains cables in particular [and speaker cables to a degree] make such a difference, however, as has already been explained, the people who go to these lengths are already well aware, and therefore accept that there is always an element of risk involved in the removal of extra safety aspects such as fuses in cabling etc, however, it must be understood and accepted that these people are striving to achieve a no compromise situation through out their audio replay chain as far as physically possible whilst still retaining the basic safety aspects of each individual piece of equipment in the chain i.e.; via the retention of the correct rating internal fuse etc.

Yes, but the voltage rails will droop so it won't uphold peaks as well if it receives a lesser 'top-up' charge.

Is this similar to what balanced interconnects do ?
Is one wire an earth or substitute earth ?

I only had the flying lead as I expect to need it in the final operating place
    - plus it was free - nothing to do with *that* of course !

Some appliances are hard wired, but I think there is always a pull out fuse at the wall
A very thick cable probably would not fit those though except with mods
