We've got the Morris Minor (my wife has a Traveller) and open hearth fire, out of that lot!

There is a lot we like about the 60s design aesthetic, but as the house we live in dates from 1897, it would be wrong to go all-out 60s, when designing the kitchen, so we'll be giving the nod to trends from earlier eras too, and combining them sympathetically, to give an individual look

You can tell that we're not the type of folks to walk into the likes of B&Q and just buy any old thing that everyone else has got, eh?

My advice is to stay away from agas and similar stanleys etc, If they are oil fired they tend to need to be in all the time and use too much fuel as well as not being very 'green'. The people I know who have them (several) are mostly intending to get rid, there are always wannabe 'Terry and Junes' who will pay top dollar to get that authentic classic look in their mock tudor barrat house


We have to use oil for heating as well as peat, coal, bottled gas and electricity as fuel sources, most of which are not particularly green either! Some friends of my partner recently moved into a rented bungalow with a 60s kitchen and they painted the cupboard doors to clean it up a bit and it looks cool in a retro stylee!

That's a good point, and would defo go against Del's 'greeny' principles!

Nice one. It's a matter of taking inspiration from some key design elements of the era and extrapolating them into a wider and equally relevant context. We've always done our own interior design, as we like things that we have to be individual and unique

That is an American kitchen in an American home. This style of kitchen is still very prolific. At least it is in the many homes I have been in in New York which were built in the 50's - 60's and never modernised.
The construction is painted birtch ply.

Yup... What I like about it is the style and shape of the units, and the orange colour. I also like the mosaic-effect floor, which is probably lino!

I'd like to create that style of floor, only with different types of Welsh slate, and work the look of the units into that, without the effect being old-fashioned. There's defo two types of retro: cool and very naff.

It's a matter of getting the balance right

I'll be looking for some early 1960s wall-mounted speakers (something covered in typical 1960s grille fabric) to put in the kitchen, which I can pump sounds into from the system upstairs.

Any suggestions welcome!
