[Beechwoods]

I've always been someone who's liked to put together my own compilations of stuff. I'm probably not the only one. How's about we share some of our favourite 'playlists' here... strictly no 'pre-produced' compilations, just our own sequences. Make sure you give 'em a decent name so we know what you're on about!

They could be various artists compilations, single band 'Best Ofs' or genre introductions... get those old C90's out folk!

Here's one to get us started. I started compiling this on a sequence of 6 cassette tapes back in about 1988. Most of it was recorded off the radio or friend's tapes back then, but since I've tracked down most of the stuff on vinyl and CD, and assembled a 4h30m compilation together with satisfies my cravings for 'Old Indie Stuff' from the glory days when I was first discovering music on John Peel's evening shows. Recordings of some tracks from his Festive Fifties have the added value of his inimitable introductions, all part of the experience

Aaahhh, happy days.
Did you ever get so good at this that you knew the perfect track to exactly fit on the end of the tape ---- just by looking at the diameter of what was left on the spool?

I did (!!!!!)

Somehow though, I seem to have a great pile of tapes (of albums on C90's)with the last bit filled on one side or the other by 'Overnight Bag' by Rory Gallagher. Wierd!! (great track, though)

I used to always struggle with tapes getting the timing right but its great doing this on computer as you can see how many mins are left and then add the right length.
I often do different types for emotions to encourage a kind of journey with the music where different themes could be explored also I would do different complimations to fit that person I would want to find that balance between playing safe with music i knew they like and putting on stuff that they might likr but might challenge them. I used to do this tapes for work as worked in a day centre that we used for a music session there was one guy who I just really connected as he would allow himself to totally feel every emotion I remember one time with one tape when it was sad he was holding me then when it became more joyful he started to laugh and dance.
I remember one time with my best mate trying to get him into Operation Mindcrime he just was not interested intially so I would add songs right at the end this was good with tapes as he would never know it was coming; about 6 months latter he was saying to me that I was right the album is very good. These days he reckons most of the music i listen to is to miserable!
I think my friends kind of saw me as a quality control I was the one always buying albums and they woul wait till I started to share my love of something before risking.
Its funny I gotten so many people into so much music but its been rarely the other way around.
At the moment on computer I have music split into different files with such titles as:
Romance Passion and the Sensual
Music Journey
Music for my Funeral
Deep and uplifting
Listening
Fav prog Metal
World muisc
etc

Yes yes yes!!! But only with C60s.

I was a regular taper from to top 40 countdown every Sunday. I'd watch TOTP on a Thursday, note all those I wanted to record, then eagerly await the countdown. Then they changed things, and Sunday was the first time you'd hear who was at number one.

As for compilations, I've been working on some 12 inch compilations this week. I'm a sucker for 80s remixes. I think I've come up with 4 hours of totally corking 12 inch magic.

Can't wait to annoy my eldest son by playing them (he hates my choice of music).

It was C90's for me - I wouldn't know my way round a C60!

I never really trusted C90s. A little too thin for my liking. Well, the 'hi-fi' wasn't really hi-fi. We started with an Amstrad music centre (one of the flat ones - turntable, tuner, cassette deck laid out side by side), but this was crap, so we exchanged for a tower system (still Amstrad).

When I was 16 I received a Matsui midi stereo system. Wow! That was hi-fi for me. I loved it. I can still feel the buttons on the tape decks now. Lovely. Of course, being cheaply made, it wasn't particularly gentle, so C90s were problematic.

Hence C60s only.

I do still have my tape collection, with inserts all neatly written or typed. Last time I listened to them, they sounded dreadful. Completely lacking high frequencies.

Fantastic thread to raise from the grave. I always wondered why it never took off. Maybe now, in the age of the Playlist, it might gain some traction!
