Fitting a KAB PS-1200 to a Technics SL-1210

The Technics SL1210 Mk2 on the operating table. The platter has to come off, then 5 screws to remove the cover over the gubbins of the power supply and motor contriol :-



Then the blue and red wires to the Rectifier board need to be located, they are attached to two posts :-



Threading the DC input wire from the Kab PS1200 :-



Then tie a knot in it, innit ? This is for strain relief :-



Now, snip snip, sorry don't have three hands for the photo and cutting at the same time :-



Now wrap the DC input wires around the AC (yes!) input posts of the rectifier board.



A little dab and your done (of solder that is ) :-



You'll notice the original blue and red are still there, it can be reverted to stock later.

It took me about 1hr all up, Someone used to this kind of work would do it in less then 30 minutes, no worries

I would be tempted to fit a bit of shrink fit on the end of those two loose wires, just to be safe (assuming the other end of them is still connected to something.

Yep, I should have done that, I'm not very used to DIY I didn't have any to hand either. There's no danger, though, because those two wires come from the deck's transformer which is diconnected.

In fact the original mains cable is plugged into the "sense" socket of the PS1200. The sense circuit puts 5v DC back to the original on/off switch, this way the turning the deck on is as before.

Am I right in thinking that the KAB psu provides a (regulated?) DC of 30 volts? If that's the case, would there be any drawbacks to someone who knows what they are doing making their own psu? I'm sure it could be done for a lot less than the cost of the imported KAB unit.

I wouldn't like to say yes or no, but effectively if you know what your are doing why not ? the only feature that the KAB has it that it puts 5v Dc switching volatge out through the "old" mains connection, so that the on/off switch of the SL1200/SL1210 works as before.

my ps1200 should be here in week or two. i keep getting confused about the connection of the 'sense' circuit. does the original plug get snipped off or something? i can't find a pic of the final set up anywhere.

The Kab PS1200 is designed for the USA & Canada. I'm going to the US in a copule of months so I'll pick up a USA 2 pin mains plug whilst I'm there (I could get a couple). Mine, being for europe, had just a euro style 2 pin plug on it. Yours will have a 3 pin standard UK plug, but you'll only have 2 wires.

I snipped my plug, tinned the end of the mains wires and then just jammed them into the socket on the back of the PS1200 for the "sense" circuit. It works fine. This is what Kevin advised me to do.

Hi Peter. I'm getting ready to do this to my 1210 M5G. Do I have to drill a hole in to the back of the TT to get the white KAB wire in to the area where you solder it?
