I'm running my Touch on this and it works fine. I haven't done any direct comparisions with the original though. I had it spare so used it on the Touch set to 5 Volts. Try it and see what you think.

Make sure you get the polarity right though. The arrow on the connector should point to the + on the plug.

I read about the schenanigans with different versions of that supply..whats that all about?
Good to know I can try my Maplins supply with the Touch.

I've read elsewhere that the SB3 and Touch aftermarket supplies are pretty much interchangable, and (more importantly) that any device will only draw whatever current it needs, and as long as its fed the right voltage things should be ok.

Also, this Mplains supply is regualted and voltage should be stable.

Works fine, sounding good. (great actually)
Radio Paradise at 192k tinkling away in background, will plug standard Touch PSU in tonight for a quick compare.

Not going back to the original Touch PSU.
Cleaner more dynamic and solid sound with the Maplin/foo cable in place, even better when plugged into a Tacima mains block.

Ok Maplins have just got back to me about the VN10L.

As suspected they're changing their supplier the...

1.5,3,4.5,6,7.5,9 & 12 v range version is old stock and still in the stores.

Whereas if you order from the web site you will receive the new version which is the 5,6,7.5,9,12,13.2 v range version.

I've just ordered one for my SB3, 5V, it also may be OK for a Beresford as it now goes up to 13.2V

I checked in with my local Maplin store yesterday, they still had 7 of the old/ red model in stock (they said they usually only carry a couple), so it may be a while yet before new / blue reaches the stores.

They do have this one on offer until 8.00pm tonight, it does 5v but seems a lightweight affair compered to the VN10L, which is a much more solid, confidence inspiring job.

I also tried my local Maplins for the VN10L model as a replacement for my 7510 Mk IV power supply - thinking of utilising the 13.2 v output option. Was on the point of parting with cash when I noticed that the top voltage option quoted on the box was only 12v, so old stock.....and there were a few similar boxes on the shelf!

Then considered ordering the website model, but given the previous comments I am not convinced that I will receive the newer version.

Perhaps I should plump for the more expensive model

Only if you want to gain nothing or make it worse!!!

The point of replacing the psu is to get from a noisy SMPS to and much quieter linear supply. The maplin linear supplies should be better than the std smps but you can do much better. You dont need to spend a fortune on a commercial PSU if you can do some basic diy electronics. Even using a fixed 5v maplin supply as a base and adding a commercial decent low noise reg will be an enormous upgrade.

If it were me I build from scratch.

50va 2x9v toroid transformer, Schottky Diodes for bridge rec, Audio upgrades (F&T) 22,000uF extremely low esr Cap, SPower 5v reg and a case. All for under £100.

This is my own SB3 PSU. Its a 50va 9v tx capable of delivering 5.5A, hexfred diodes and then 2 x 22,000uF panasonic TSUP. It then runs 1 SPower 5v low noise reg for the main feed to the SB3 (minus the display), 1 std 7805 reg for the display, and an unregulated supply for the internal clocks.

One of the beauty's of the SB touch is that you dont need to separate the display as its not the HV fluorescent type. Therefore there will be no requirement for the additional display supply. A single low noise regulator is all that will be required.

Make no bones about it, any of the commercial PSU's will be no more than a large transformer, recs, cap, low noise reg of choice and a pretty case!!!

This is the pcb. It's sold as a dual (+/-) board but it can be modded with a wired link to run a single supply full wave.

Not sure how that Maplins PSU will be with the Dac, but I swapped it over for the stock SB Touch supply and found it better.
Its what I use now on my Touch.

I have that one of these too, I bought it for a T-Class amp, it's still a switched mode one however @ 60W, more than necessary for the SBs and Beresford. Currently I'm using it on my SB3 which requires the same as the touch, I'm waiting for the new 5v capable VN10L to filter it's way into the shops too.

I prefer the VN10L on my Squeezebox receivers (9V), and Beresford (12V), @ 20W linear, which is more than enough for them.

Either would be an improvement IMHO, but the VN10L ticks more boxes for me, and it's cheaper
