10'' Bass unit/5'' Mid.. Quite large around 2ft tall

Nice! Why don't they make proper speakers like that anymore? We seem to have lost the plot in many ways with how loudspeakers are designed today.....

I'm sure this fact will come crashing home to Alex UK when he fires up his SP1s!

Going back to the Celests, and as good as the 33's no doubt are, there's something about the ABR-equipped models I love, though: a 'meaty and rhythmic chunkiness' (without flab) which seems to underpin music in a way you don't quite get with the non-ABR models, know what I mean?

The Who said it best: "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy"... *That* is the 66's to tee, coupled with their wonderful openness and musically communicative qualities higher up the freqency range.

It's one thing which has shocked and stunned me with the 66's: just how 'big' they sound for what are, to all intents and purposes, not overly large speakers, certainly in terms of cabinet size, height aside, compared to something like my Lockwoods. There's real 'heft' and slam in the bass, and scale, which you just don't get with rather 'frigid & insipid' sounding modern floor-standers of a similar physical size and internal volume.

Don't get me wrong, though, the Celests aren't perfect - far from it, as no speaker is, but goodness me did Celestion get the balance of compromises right all those years ago and successfully design a wonderfully musical sounding pair of loudspeakers (certainly to my ears)!

I'm sure that the 33s and 44s share similar traits, as indeed do my 15XRs.

I'd love to walk into, say, Focal headquarters in France (whose speakers to me sound superb in a 'hi-fi' sense, ticking all the boxes there, but are painfully lacking in 'musicality', for want of a better word) with a pair of 66s under my arm (if indeed that were possible!) and say "Bonjour monsieur, listen to how these babies are voiced compared to the speakers you make, and tell me what you think you're doing wrong!"

Do you think they would 'get' it?

Of course, I'd likely be swiftly poked in the eye with a large saucisson and told to 'va te faire foutre!' - but it would nevertheless be an amusing exercise....
