Hmmm... I'm not DIY-competent as such but I suspect that, unless proper care is taken, there might be an electrical mismatch issue that will affect the integrity of the digital signal at the receiving end. Can anyone more competent enlighten us?

As for the USB connection, I haven't even considered using it yet as I'm pretty old school and only just started to venture into computer audio.

I'm thinking of getting an Apple iPOD Classic to dock with an Onkyo ND-S1 digital transport; and even then, will still use the coaxial input of the DAC until I get a suitable glass-based optical cable for use with the optical input so I don't need to keep on reconnecting between sources to use the sole coaxial input
