I always enjoy reading about your vinyl adventures. Lovely patina on that mat (gunmetal? ).

ell the new tonearm works and it outputs sonics but it hums like a bugger. I'm knackered and had a long day so this is a problem for another day. I have been looking around the spares bin again and managed to find to N44-7 (SAS/B) JICO stylus which originally was used on my M44 and M55 cartridges so it looks like I won't have to spend any more money with JICO. I'll have to do some experiments tomorrow. Suffice to say I'm very pleased that all the modding has worked and now the fine tuning begins .

    As ever stay tuned...

Glad you enjoy it Charles. The mat is a Tenuto mat from years ago and has had thousands of hours of usage over the last decade. Stay tuned, this project has still got a fare bit of steam left in the tank.

Sounds like an earthing problem. Does the SME arm use phono sockets? The metalwork of the arm is earthed separately via an earthing screw, near the phono sockets and uses a separate wire back to the amplifier.

I'm going to investidate over the next few days. It does indeed use RCA sockets and I have a seperate grounding wire which I've attached to the phonostage, I think the IC's might be a little too close to the 301's motor and might be picking up something from there. It's all good fun and a little frustating at the same time.

Blinmey it's been some time since I updates this, over a month, bi-gum! Lots of stuff going on and some hardware swapping, more tomorrow if I get chance.

As far as vintage Garrard decks go, I think the 301 is probably my favourite.

    Grease bearing or oil bearing?

For me it would be the first edition of the 401, for both appearence and performance.

Good question, I'd take either if one was offered, but if I could choose whatever I wanted, a grease bearing restored to something like this . . .
