Cyrus 7 amplifier

Morning all.
I have been offered a Cyrus 7 amp and other than what I’ve been reading on-line, I know precisely zero about their products (no experience).
According to HiFi engine, the amp dates from 1999-2003 and so the one I’m talking about is probably 25 years old. Highly likely not serviced, but I cannot verify.
Looks like you need to upgrade the PSU to get the best out of these units.
Any thoughts, first hand experience, things to look out for?
Is it likely that it would need to go to a Cyrus specialist for service?

Fairly unremarkable amp, unless you like the looks or it's very cheap (under £50) I'd pass.

Cyrus is known - anecdotally at least - for unreliability I think due to them having to cram everything into the cute little cases.

It's about the same age as the NAD 320BEE amp that I use daily in my TV system - no 'service' there either but it does have a full-size case.

I think you'd struggle to get one for 50 quid, more like £200 is about the norm.

Maybe they got a bit better built later on - I bought one of the very first Cyrus 1s, within a couple of years the paint started falling off the knobs. I had it for about 10 years, and in that time it packed up once - "dry joint" the dealer told me, cost £40 to fix. That might qualify it as "unreliable", everything else I've ever bought lasted way longer than that without issues.

It's not worth more than fifty quid IMO regardless of how much people are paying for them.

Amps crammed into small cases are just never a good idea. Capacitors get stuck next to transistors and heat sinks because there's not enough space to lay it all out optimally, and the heat means they die early.

Never mind the 'space saving'. You're 'saving' a cube of air about 4'' by 4'' by 2''. If that amount of space really matters then you've got much bigger issues to solve.

You need to have a word with your calculator Mart - 4"x4"x2"? That's about the size of 3 fag packets, and these Cyrus units are half size. Not that it matters to me, I'll stick with me full-size amp that looks like it would hurt if it fell on your head. But Cyrus were going for "compact form factor" (their words) to appeal to folk who didn't want their kit to dominate the room.

I'm sure they must have gotten on top of earlier reliability issues, you're not going to be successful in business for 40-odd years by building expensive skip-fodder. Unless your name's Dyson

The dimensions of the Cyrus 7 are: H73 x W215 x D360mm, or in 'antique units': H2.874" x W8.43" x D14.17".

how does the Cyrus 7 sound?

Old enough to remember what Hifi review folks thought about this particular Cyrus amp back in the day?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm looking for a nice little amp to drive my old (but still amazing) Townshend Glastonbury speakers.
Google AI recommends this Amp over the TEAC A-H500.
Given how nice they sound with this cheap-a$$ TEAC CD/Tuner thingy I'd like to find one at a good price to try!!?
