Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs but, if you really don't know the era, Japan, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Cabaret Voltaire, The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, The The, The Human League, The Specials, Fun Boy Three (amongst many others) are all well worth exploring.
Apologies if you already know this.

LOL, I've got LPs by the first 4 acts mentioned there, I'm an 80s kid, but wasn't into contemporary music back then, I backtracked on it during the 90s and since. Don't like the Cure though or any of that Goth crap. I do like some stuff on 4AD though like Dead can dance et al. The Specials? Yeh they were good, but wouldn't want to listen to them now. 'Ghost train' is one of the most memorable songs of my childhood, along with Bowies 'Ashes to ashes'.

Japan, Gary Numan, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Specials are the only 80's groups I know, and of them I only really like the last two.
Other 80's groups I like are Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Nine Below Zero, and Elvis Costello.
Generally I regarded most of the 80's groups as being ephemeral: I would buy several, listen to them for a few weeks and then pass them on.
