I went for a flu and covid jab this morning (I wasn't going to bother, but Anita kept on at me to have it done). I think that just leaves a shingles vaccination, but looking at the blurb on the NHS website I really can't tell if I'm eligible. It's really confusing, see what you think:

People eligible:
Those who turn 65 on or after 1st September 2023
Those aged 70 to 79

Now I turned 65 before 1st Sept 2023, but I'm not 70 to 79 either. So what is it with those of us between 66 and 69? Are we already immune?

Steve, did you catch chicken pox as a child? If you didn't, then you don't really need a shingles jab.

You can still get shingles, as I understand it. Possibly it depends on how bad you had chicken pox.

Shingles is highly contagious, so if you come into contact with a sufferer then you could pick it up.

With those who had chicken pox as a child, the virus afterwards lies dormant in the spinal column, and can become reactivated as shingles in later life. If you are run down, come into contact with someone who is ill, or have suffered physical trauma,the chance of reactivation is higher.

Yes I did, I was quite young, maybe six or seven, but I do remember it. Or rather I remember the pink stuff that my mum painted all over the spots.

But wouldn't you agree the NHS' eligibility criteria make no sense?

One of my favourite people, comedian Bob Mortimer got shingles last year, and it wiped him out so badly he could barely stand, let alone walk. He completely lost the use of one of his legs and while filming his fishing programme with Paul Whitehouse they got him around in a wheelchair. And his leg still isn't 100%. He said the experience was worse than his heart failure and subsequent bypass in 2015.

I've just talked myself into enquiring about the jab.

I agree it makes no sense. I think what they were trying to say is anyone over 65 is eligible.

Someone might have cut and paste it from some other announcement and then changed it a bit - but not enough.
