watched a few films recently.



'Runaway Train' (1985)

Two convicts escape from prison and hitch a ride on a train which is just four engines coupled together. When the engineer has a heart attack, the train runs out of control.

Not a bad film this, the original screenplay was by Akira Kurosawa. Despite the thin premise it has good characters and performances. Worth a watch.

'Heartbreak Ridge' (1986)

Saw this at the flicks when it came out and didn't think much of it but seen it many times over the years and it's grown on me.

There are so many things wrong with this film it would take a book to list them but that doesn't really matter. Eastwood is always good, there's lots of classic moments and dialogue, and the understated ending is quite poignant.

Not essential, but close to it.

Today's 'Movie For A Dreary Afternoon' is



'55 Days At Peking' (1963)

Charlton Heston is a U.S Marine taking on the Chinese in the Boxer Rebellion.

Good looking film but otherwise a bit of a disaster.

The production had all sorts of issues. There were script problems from day one. Ava Gardner was a drunk, David Niven demanded re-writes for his character, and the director had a heart attack two months into filming.

Still worth a watch though just for the spectacle.

It was better than I recall it being. Just the pace slows down too many times - but I notice that with of a lot of films from that era.

'Time Bandits' (1981)

I was in London when this came out, I remember the Underground was covered in posters advertising it.

Classic film that can be watched any number of times.

Yes - it's a very enjoyable film: made before Terry Gilliam went OTT with his direction.
