    What type and rating fuse was fitted underneath the mains connector socket Mike?

    What you need is a "slow blow" fuse of 2A rating. These are usually marked on the end cap as T2A or sometimes T2A240V. Failing that slow blow fuses can sometimes be identified by looking at the actual wire inside the glass tube. The most obvious sign is a small metallic lump near the centre of the wire.

    The fuse you can't read, has it blown? And was there no spare in the fuse holder, or has that blown as well?
