This is one such record

Great album cover, but I've never been much for Oldfield. I didn't even like 'Tubular Bells.'

On a fishing holiday round Scotland in 1975 I took my newly-bought Prinzsound cassette player (£21 from Dixons) and the only tapes we had were Temptations' greatest hits, Autobahn, and Tubular Bells. By the end of the holiday and having shelled out fortunes on batteries, we were positively sick of Tubular Bells.

Even though I do have it on vinyl I think I've only played it once.

But overall his output over the 50 years is pretty varied, so there is probably something there for everyone, as well as a lot of cack. But this (Return to Ommadawn) is my favourite. Proper chilled.

Steve was playing this the other day, coincidentally it's one of the CDs I bought last week.

A mate taped this for me back when it came out and I played it to death, but I've not heard it since maybe mid 1990s:

I think it has stood the test of time. And I think I'll seek out an earlier one of theirs ("Introduce Yourself") which was before Mike Patton took on lead singer job. I seem to remember liking it, the track "We Care a Lot" is a belter "It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it"
