Well, the Faithless album I just played reminded me why it was the last album of theirs I bought. Only 2 tracks on it I really liked, both with Dido on vocals. Not a massive fan of Dido, I don't have any of her albums, but I've always thought her voice suited Faithless' music perfectly.

Anyway, thought I'd give this one a play, another that doesn't get too many outings. Straight away, yes, this is more like it

I think it is the dynamic range in dB - so logarithmic.

Doesn't matter really, just get the version with the highest numbers. It's a pretty good buying guide as long as you're not into obscure music, I've been using it for years.

Other than that remaster of 'Infected' you left with me the only other CD where I have the original and a remaster is 'Aja' - but if you look at the database there is no over compressed masterings of Aja:

(you can't use it as an accurate comparison to vinyl, although green vinyl version is still going to be better than red download or CD)

CDs have a dynamic range of at least 80dB: the theoretical figure for 16 bit undithered is 96dB, and with noise shaping this can be increased to 140dB. So maybe the numbers are the dynamic range in dB divided by 10.

Rather like if you rock up to A&E with a broken leg and the doctors ask you to rate the pain on a scale of one to ten, perhaps these numbers in coloured boxes are just to keep things simple for those without a background in physics. Like me

If you click on one of the album names listed you may well be directed to a page which has a tiny bit more detail about the individual tracks, but it makes no sense to me.

So first up this Canadian jazz pianist and singer who is for me, one of the great jazz artists post the 1950’s prolific jazz explosion which made household names of the likes of Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, etc, etc,.

Married to our very own Declan MacManus, who is without doubt one of our finest singer songwriters of the 70’s, 80’s and beyond.

This album from 1999 is her fifth studio album it went Platinum in Canada, USA and New Zealand. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, the first time in 25 years that a jazz album was nominated in that category, and won two awards for Best Jazz Vocal and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical at the 42nd Grammy Awards. The album also won the Juno Award for Best Vocal Jazz Album in 2000.

Next up an all time classic album whose title track is synonymous with the now legendary singer songwriter. This his second studio album released in 1973, the album emerged from legal difficulties with Joel's former label, Family Productions and ultimately became his first breakthrough album.

The title track, a fictionalised retelling of Joel's experiences with people he met as a lounge singer in Los Angeles, peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Adult Contemporary singles chart. "Travelin' Prayer" and "Worse Comes to Worst" peaked at No. 77 and 80 on the Hot 100, respectively, while the album itself peaked at No. 27 on the US Billboard 200. The album was certified gold by the RIAA in 1975, but Joel received only $8,000 in royalties.
