It all depends on what you are looking for, and will come down to personal preference.
That is another advantage of using a stand alone phono stage - many of them come with a range of adjustments for gain, capacitance, etc. Some settings will be necessary for your particular cartridge, some may give you a small degree of tweaking to your personal taste.
