Don't worry Barry, I know exactly what it is thanks. Just popped it into Jazz listening, as it is quite freeform musically, but I suppose it could be described as Psychedelic Music, a bit like PF - Echoes in some respects. I think Ambient for style is stretching that a bit.

Yes, 'Ambient' is the sort of thing that is played in lifts, or what my dentist has playing all day, supposedly to calm the clients. I complained, so he changed it to some piano 'library music' which was much better.
Reading about Vollenweider and his philosophy, I think his work is largely unclassifiable.

There is also "quality" ambient music not to be confused with the dross you often hear in massage parlours and the like (I mean the genuine ones [emoji23]).

What is the difference between 'ambient' and 'background' music?
I would describe much of The Orb's music as 'ambient' but if that was played in a lift, some folk would be loving it, while others would be frantically pushing the 'doors open' buttonTo me 'ambient' describes anything not overly concerned with a beat or discernible structure.
Whereas 'background' to me is the stuff your parents might like, but played really quietly.
