Metcalfe's quote, "Night's candles are burned out and jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops ...", is from 'Romeo and Juliet', Act III, Scene 5 by William Shakespeare.

Extras for the assault scenes on the Norwegian coast included both Norwegians who had only recently escaped to England - many wearing their real kit - and British "Tommies", some of whom had made the same assault landings being recreated in this film.

A complete Fleet Street city room set was erected at the Denham studio for this production.

Because of Chief Dan George's age, he would have trouble remembering his lines, so during takes, Clint Eastwood would begin to mouth his lines without realizing it and had to be told to stop because it would ruin the take. In a featurette on the DVD about making this movie, Eastwood says he'd have people drill Dan George on his lines, but when it came time to shoot the scene, he'd say "Chief, just forget about the lines, tell me the story about the man who rode over the hill." And Dan George, who was apparently a natural storyteller, would then tell the story perfectly.

One of the most striking aspects of Jeremiah Johnson is, of course, its peerless photography by director of photography Duke Callaghan. The film – which began principal photography in early 1971 – was shot entirely in Redford’s adopted state of Utah and it makes magnificent use of locations such as Zion National Park, Ashley National Forest and Snow Canyon State Park. The powers-that-be at Warner Brothers had wanted the film to be shot on the backlot of the studio for monetary reasons, but star Redford and director Pollack succeeded in convincing them that the look and feel of the western film would be greatly enhanced by a location shoot.[didnt matter that a lot of the shoot was on Redford's land lol]
Pollack spent a great deal of time in post-production and credited the film’s fine critical reception to this as much as the time spent on location – ‘It’s a picture made out of rhythms and moods and wonderful performances.’ This is indeed true and Jeremiah Johnson represents a creative collaboration at the very height of its power. Haunting and not just a little evocative.

The film was to have been Steve McQueen's next film after The Hunter (1980), but he fell ill shortly after making that, so the project was scrapped. It was revived several times throughout the 1980s, with various stars in mind for the lead. Harrison Ford was offered the lead role, but turned it down because he considered it too visibly similar to Indiana Jones. The lead was first offered to Tom Selleck in 1985. He had to turn it down because of his commitment to Magnum, P.I. (1980). When the series concluded in 1988, he quickly asked if the role was still available, and accepted it. The producers spent another year gathering a reasonable budget.

Matthew Quigley's gun is a replica model 1874 Sharps Buffalo Rifle, built by Shiloh Rifles of Montana. They are chambered in .45-110, which is a .45 caliber bullet propelled by 110 grains of black powder. This round was the most accurate and powerful in the world until the advent of smokeless gunpowders.

Whisky Galore!, 1949... a classic this....




Whisky Galore! was released into UK cinemas on 16 June 1949 and was financially successful. In France, the film was retitled Whisky à gogo; the name was later used as that of a discothèque in Paris. Whisky Galore! was released in the US in December 1949, though because of restrictions on the use of the names of alcoholic drinks in titles, the film was renamed Tight Little Island. The film was given an open certification in most territories, allowing people of all ages to see it.
