I never thought that this particular record was very well re-issued/recorded/engineered, it always sounded a bit lack lustre. However I have been trying out a different record cleaning product and it seems to have made all the difference, much more clarity and detail, and better dynamics. Perhaps it's a case of not being properly cleaned when made, or maybe my ears are working fully today.

Richard Ashcroft and The Verve were from Wigan, and in the 90s I saw them live at Wigan's Haigh Hall Country Park. I actually preferred the support act (Beck), a view that didn't go down well with my mates, who were all from Wigan.

That's the thing with Wigan, lots of people come from Wigan, not many go to Wigan.

I was there once back in early 1980s, all I can recall is rows of half demolished terraced houses. Or maybe that was Widnes, I always get them confused.

Then you've got St Helens. My memory of that is it was like 100 years after the apocalypse where the survivors have cobbled together something vaguely reminiscent of the previous civilization from wreckage they found lying about.

But that was years ago and I'm told it's quite posh now.

Hi Dom, how does it stack up against their 2nd album, 'Hold Your Fire"?

For me it's a dessert Island jobbie. bought my first copy from the bargain bins of a shop in Ipswich for £1.50.. and yeah I love it far more than Hold Your Fire.

I did a few years back, I had it on an anniversary copy and did not like it much. Maybe I will try and pick up another cd version and have another listen.

Only just spotted your post Martin. The Richard Ashcroft CD was one of a number of CDs that caught my eye and picked up cheap in a charity shop.

Totally new to me, I had heard of him but had never heard anything by him. I liked the disc and will keep it, but have to confess I wouldn't have wanted to have paid full price for it.

If I see anything else by him I might be tempted, but only it is going cheap. I suspect he is a performer best seen live.
