the noise is actually traffic outside the church it was recorded in, it comes and goes but most prominent at the beginning. If I recall correctly it was recorded on a 2 track tape machine using one omnidirectional mic which the band all positioned themselves around it and a mic for the vocalist, I think it took them one day to try different set ups until they felt it was as good as they would get, and the next day just laid the tracks down live.

An alternative source, and one that I subscribe to, is that the background noise is the church's air conditioning system. It is too even and constant to be traffic noise, and if you listen carefully you can hear the 'squeak' of the fan bearings.
But you are right - The Trinity Sessions was recorded using a Calrec Soundfield microphone set to the Blumlein 'crossed figure of 8' configuration.
