Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces, a fantastically uplifting album. Unfortunately not as good on CD as on vinyl, so the hunt continues for an original. Might be my room, but the bass is better controlled on the vinyl version, in fact everything is.

Edit, fuck it just got a brand new vinyl copy on Ebay for £27 posted, for some reason typical price seems to be £40 now for many of these reissues, fuck that!!

The record sales and the critical consensus tends to point otherwise but, its a subjective point.

I like most Pink Floyd so it doesn't really bother me.

Just as a matter of interest, I'm listening to Roger Waters - The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux; I dont think that Roger really needed to do this album. I think it's more of a self indulgent thing that Roger has done as the original album is quite simply on its own high and mighty pedestal in the world of music. Roger (in his very old tired sounding voice) is just laying out his critical spiel about things that are in his mind in conjunction with the original lyrics of the songs - its OKish but, its a little boring; maybe it's his age, I really don't know but I don't feel it adds anything new to the album other than the clever lyrics and some of the messages it conveys.

It's an album that's for Pink Floyd fans to individually assess for themselves and make their own judgement. As for me, I'm on teetering on the top of the fence - it's a bit boring but, as much as I find his voice tired and a little effortless, I find myself listening to it................. maybe because of it's relationship to the original album !!! I've got to ponder some more !!

I read that he hardly ever turned up for rehearsals and when he did he was off his tits.

Rest of the band wanted to become millionaire rock stars, I don't think they had much choice myself.

The early stuff is a bit patchy, had a listen to 'Piper' not so long ago, some great stuff on that, and some utter crap.

Ofc it's all over after 'Final Cut'. 'Lapse' has its moments but it isn't Floyd, and as for 'Endless River' - more like 'Endless Wank.'

None of them's solo stuff ever did anything for me at all including 'The Madcap Laughs' (although it's a great album title).

Got that on LP must be 30 years ago. Listened to it once.

My favourite Beefheart is 'Clear Spot'.

Agree, that and Safe as Milk. Spotlight Kid is pretty gòd as well.

Agree with all of that. I saw PF in the late '60s when Barratt was with them, but even at that time it is quite possible that Gilmour was in the wings ready to take over.

Safe As Milk is the only one I have. I'm by no means a Beefheart fan, and just picked that particular album at random. I could just have easily bought one of the others. I played it just once, and found it a bit dated sounding, very sixties, and not necessarily in a good way.

I might give it another go in the morning, see if I've grown into it yet. You never know, my music choices do seem to be moving back in time at the moment.

I more or less lost interest after DSOTM, and partially so after Waters left.

As such I don't have a copy of The Wall, though I do have a copy of The Final Cut.

Yes we played it on the drive back from NEBO. Surprisingly good recording I thought, but, bookended by 'Astronmy Domine' (great) and 'Bike' (good grief), patchy is an understatement.

I bought The Madcap Laughs soon after it came out, after hearing 'Terrapin' on a Harvest sampler album. Which turned out to be the only song I liked.

For me the only Floyd worth listening to was when Gilmour and Waters could work together, and Syd was elsewhere.

......... And me, so much so I've got about 3 or 4 recordings of it. There again, I've got a lot of Pink Floyd as they're just soooooooooo good !!!

I often wonder why a lot of people just dont bother investing in a "PROPER" hi-fi system; I think unless you've played an album on something really good, you've probably never really heard the album !!!!!

Maybe nowadays, music isn't so important in people's lives like it used to be ???

I think it will always be important, but there are just so many other ways to be entertained these days.

At no point in the last 50 years did I ever think "This sounds crap, I wish I had a better stereo". I either connected with the music or didn't, regardless of what it was played on. Nice to have a system that can resolve more detail and greater scale, but the 'essence' will always be there if it's a good song. that way I can still enjoy classic rock songs on my jobsite radio.

Which brings me to an unrelated gripe: Planet Rock has vanished from my radio Apparently it's no longer going out on DAB, just DAB+, or tinternet. So looks like I need a DAB+ radio, which will be 130 quid. I sense a con here.
