Tailgaters. Do you love or hate them

The type that try to bully you to go faster as they haven't got the balls to overtake. Yesterday an Ambulance pulled out in front of the car in front of me from the local small hospital on the way to the larger county hospital. The first roundabout about 8 miles away. Clearly working on someone as they were between 20 - 30mph in a 50. The guy in front and I were safely and patiently accepting the situation.

Mrs middle aged Fiat 500 was mostly in my rear view mirror or on the imaginary piece of elastic where they drop back and then can't help themselves and loom up again. Then tried the "pop the front R wheel over the white line" game.....no chance....2 way winding country road and knew that they were not intending to attempt to overtake.

What goes on in these peoples heads? I could not have gone any faster in any event. If the ambulance had not been there then she would have been up my arse in the slower (30mph) areas as having driven professionally in the main I adhere to the speed limits and yes that means doing 50 in a 50 or 60 in a 60 etc etc. Makes my piss boil.

Tailgaters always seem to appear along twisting country lanes. They may know the road but I don't necessarily, so I will look for a place where I can pull over and let them have the road. Often these places are few and far between, much to the annoyance of the tailgater, who then starts flashing his/her lights.

I'm going to be a smartarse here and suggest that torque steer only afflicts cars where the steering axle and the powered axle are the same. So front wheel drive only. The Capri was rear wheel drive. Of course I might be wrong, bikes were more my thing.

I used to work with a lad who, not long after passing his driving test, boasted about how fast a driver he was. Like that was something to be proud of. Thing is, he was convinced he was faster than most on the road as he was always in front I struggled to make him understand the flaw in his logic.

I used to have a Golf GTi that suffered with this when accelerating hard. Added to the fun .

My Alfa 33 was the same. A hoot!

in general, oversteer is, or was a common issue with rear drives, although you could get it on a fwd too, jjust much more difficult. obviously the reverse is or was for understeer. in all cases your going too fast for the car's grip at time. its nice to practice both in a quiet wide section of rd in snow. it will get you used to the feeling and how to avoid catastrophe.
most cars now have systems to stop you doing this by accident now.

Where do you get 200k from a Tesla M3 is around £50k now and Model Y about 55k..

My comment related to the price for the Capri. I have no idea what a Tesla costs but I know it would be out of my price range.

I had a Renault Clio Cup 172 in the mid 2000s and that was pretty lively when floored and had a bit of torque steer. I then had a Megane and then traded down to a more sedate Ciio 1.2 Turbo which had a bit of turbo lag so I had it remapped. Once remapped it was a much more fun and far more comfortable car that the Cup and it was great fun. A real wolf in sheep's clothing. Only got rid of it earlier this year. I now have one these DGI - Turbo affairs. Direct injection is a real revelation and such fun.

I have driven that road for the last 47 years and I know every part of it intimately but I understand what you are saying. We were in Somerset the other week and the last time I was there was 20 years ago. I got the tailgate treatment there from white van man and others colours of van too. I just stick to what I feel is safe in the circumstances and hope they have a heart attack as they get frustrated.
