Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 1979...



William Shatner, who saw the completed film for the first time at the world premiere, was struck by the overall sluggishness of this film, and was convinced that the Star Trek franchise died there and then. He opined, "Well, that's it. We gave it our best shot, it wasn't good, and it will never happen again." Recalling his initial reaction 15 years later, he added "Shows you what I know."

Uhura's communications earpieces are the only original props from Star Trek (1966). They were dug out of storage when it was realized someone had forgotten to make new ones for this film.

James Doohan also devised the Vulcan words heard during the Kolinahr sequence. The scenes were originally shot in English, and when it was decided to change the dialogue to Vulcan, Doohan wrote lines that fit the existing lip movements. Some of the subtitles were rearranged to make this less obvious.

During the rewrite of the final scenes, the studio executives clashed with Gene Roddenberry about the script's ending, believing that the concept of a living machine was too far-fetched. The executives consulted Isaac Asimov; if the writer decided a sentient machine was plausible, the ending could stay. Asimov loved the ending, but made one small suggestion; he felt that the use of the word "wormhole" was incorrect, and that the anomaly that the Enterprise found itself in would be more accurately called a "temporal tunnel".

The Limehouse Golem, 2016... bluray




Though the film is based on a work of fiction, three of the readers in the library, all of them suspects in the golem case, are real people who did at the time live in London: Karl Marx, George Gissing and Dan Leno.

The role portrayed by Bill Nighy was initially given to Alan Rickman, but the latter had to pull out of the project due to ill-health, which eventually led to his untimely death from pancreatic cancer in January 2016. At the end of the end credits, the following dedication appears on the screen: "This film is dedicated to the memory of Alan Rickman".

Though only appearing in the movie briefly, philosopher Karl Marx was indeed living in London at the time the movie is set. Because he was a Jew and propounded socialist ideas, he was actually harassed by the police.

the sets are lush and atmospheric acting is good too. script is ok but its a kind of flashback style that can disrupt the flow at times. well worth watching a couple of times to catch it all..

The Four Feathers, 1939.. criterion bluray, regA.



A timid 1880s British Army officer resigns, burning his last-day summons to war in Egypt. Accusing him of cowardice, his girlfriend and three friends give him white feathers. To gain redemption, he shadows his friends to save their lives.

Zoltan Korda's original, and the best version of this A E W Mason 'BOYS OWN' tale with a good cast t'boot.

The action scenes, photographed by Osmond Borradaile, were not only filmed where the historical battles had taken place, but also included among the many extras, people who had witnessed or participated in the fighting more than forty years earlier. These battle scenes further benefitted from Director Zoltan Korda's expertise at large-scale action and his early experience as a cavalry officer.

The sailing ships pulled by hordes of Sudanese along the Nile were constructed specially for the production in exact period detail at great cost.

Blood Simple, 19844... bluray..




On the advice of Sam Raimi, the Coens went door-to-door showing potential investors a two minute 'trailer' of the film they planned to make. They ultimately raised $750,000 in a little over a year, enough to begin production of the movie.

The original video version of Blood Simple couldn't get the rights to use The Four Tops song "It's the Same Old Song" (which essentially became the theme for the film). It was instead replaced with the Neil Diamond cover song of "I'm a Believer." Later DVD and Blu-ray releases restore the Four Tops song.

yes it was a close to a classic tbh... first film too...

I'm sure I've seen (I think I've seen all of the Coen brother's output), but can't remember much about it.
