Might go down the garden room route myself, if we don’t move house, although we are struggling to find something we like in our budget. As my current music room , the loft is far from ideal.

Great idea, you can do something purpose built and no problems annoying others in the house or next door?

Some of those garden rooms look pretty smart - I have a couple of customers who have one. One uses it for her pet grooming business, the other uses it as his office.

But they're timber structures, and I imagine playing music at moderate to high levels will sound like you're inside a giant loudspeaker cabinet, and will eventually piss off your neighbours.

Enlarging an existing brick garage and making it habitable would be good, but would prob cost about £10k though.

Moving would be the preferred choice, grandparent duties, but if we end up staying where we are then a garden room would be a good solution.

It's an interesting idea, but a quick look indicates a typical cost of around £1K per square metre, so for a reasonable size it's going to cost about £10K.

Also as Steve says, there are a lot of hard reflective surfaces to deal with, as well as having to install heating for the winter months. If it could be attached to the house as an extension (a bit like a conservatory) then that might help matters.

(Why not turn the living room into a listening room and put the TV in the garden room? )

They are not all timber structures now, lots of choice out there, and extension is not not possible unfortunately.
