Random trip through all things Streaming last night wondering what to watch.
Tripped over The Mummy (2017) with Tom Cruise.



Missed it when it came out,
was always curious about it though as it crashed a potential movie franchise (apparently) because it was so badly received.

Enjoyed Bendan Frasers 2017 movie, how bad could it be?

Not...terrible, exactly.
Some good effects work, and worth the price of admission for Russell Crowe's insane "cor blimey Guv'nor" take on Mr Hyde.

Tom Cruise though,
worse performance of his I've seen.

Avoid.

Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, 1942..




During the sequence showing the trials of the new bomb-sight, several different types of aircraft are seen in the stock footage used. A Douglas A-20 (known in RAF service as the "Boston") takes off, then a Bristol Blenheim flies low past the camera, and finally a Vickers Wellington is seen for the rest of the sequence. The interior of the aircraft shown also appears to be a Wellington, recognisable by its unique framework of aluminium triangles.

Dressed to Kill, 1946...




During the UCLA Sherlock Holmes Restoration Project (1993-2003) they were unable to find any 35mm elements of the main title for this film. The restored version uses a blow-up from a used 16mm television syndication print which was dissolved into the proper point. The main title of the restored version shows a decrease in resolution, increased grain and a reduction in image registration.

The rabbit in a cabbage was made by Roullet & Decamps, a French toy manufacturing company operating in the 19th and 20th centuries, which specialized in automata.

Sherlock Holmes and the House of Fear, 1946..



According to Harry Cording, the movie was filmed completely out of sequence. With first week filming the beginning and ending when all the cast members were present. He said that Cyril Delevanti, this first person murdered, only worked four days. Universal saved money by only paying for days work and filming each victim's part in sequence. With the climax already filmed there was no need for any actor to return. Except for Aubrey Mather and Paul Cavanagh , when you died the pay stopped.

Badlands, 1973...



The actor originally cast as the architect who rings at the rich man's door did not show up, so Terrence Malick played the part himself. Malick later wanted to re-shoot the scene with another actor, but Martin Sheen refused to re-do the sequence with anyone else.

The article "Absence of Malick" written by David Handelman and published in California Magazine stated that Terrence Malick filmed this picture " . . . in Eastern Colorado between August and October of 1972. He, reportedly, gave investors no guarantee of completion or distribution, paid himself no salary and his actors and crew not much more. The costumer, mechanic and Malick himself all ended up acting in the film. As not only director, but producer, Malick suddenly found himself dealing with insurance costs, auto maintenance, unionizers, shotgun-wielding landowners and a mutinous crew. His first cinematographer, Brian Probyn, wouldn't shoot what Malick wanted, claiming the scenes wouldn't cut together. Probyn's assistant, Tak Fujimoto, then took over, but also left. Some equipment was damaged by the film's fire sequence. When a special-effects man suffered severe burns, Malick, unable to afford a helicopter, sent him to the distant hospital by car, and many crew members quit in protest. For the last two weeks of the shoot, the entire crew consisted of the director, the director's wife and a local high school student. Then Malick ran out of money whilst editing and had to take a rewrite job to finish his movie. When shown to the New York Film Festival selection board months later, the print broke, the sound was muddy, the picture was out of focus. Yet Badlands (1973) landed the prestigious closing-night slot and drew raves. Warner's paid $950,000 for the distribution rights."

The Man Who Fell to Earth, 1976..



According to costume designer May Routh, David Bowie was so thin that some of his outfits were boys' clothes.

David Bowie said of this film in Kurt Loder's article "Straight Time" published in the 12th May 1983 edition of 'Rolling Stone' magazine: "I'm so pleased I made that [movie], but I didn't really know what was being made at all". Further, in the article "Bowie at the Bijou" published in the April 1982 edition of 'Movieline' magazine, Bowie said: "I just threw my real self into that movie as I was at that time. It was the first thing I'd ever done. I was virtually ignorant of the established procedure [of making movies], so I was going a lot on instinct, and my instinct was pretty dissipated. I just learned the lines for that day and did them the way I was feeling. It wasn't that far off. I actually was feeling as alienated as that character was. It was a pretty natural performance. ... a good exhibition of somebody literally falling apart in front of you. I was totally insecure with about 10 grams [of cocaine] a day in me. I was stoned out of my mind from beginning to end". Moreover, in the same article, Bowie said of his relationship with director Nicolas Roeg: " . . . we got on rather well. I think I was fulfilling what he needed from me for that role. I wasn't disrupting . . . I wasn't disrupted. In fact, I was very eager to please. And amazingly enough, I was able to carry out everything I was asked to do. I was quite willing to stay up as long as anybody".
