The shot of locusts ascending to the sky was shot in reverse with the helicopter crew throwing peanut shells down, and actors walking backwards.

In an interview conducted for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film in 2007, Richard Gere speaks of a shot in the film during the wheat fire where a "monstrous" antiquated tractor is driven through the flames. According to Gere, director Terrence Malick was the driver.

Terrence Malick was so exhausted after the experience of making and completing the film that he retreated to Paris with his girlfriend. It would be 20 years before he made another film.

Even though Richard Gere's first notable role was in Mr. Goodbar (1977), he actually made this first, but the film took two years to edit and wasn't released until 1978.

Malick's films look pretty but they have a lot of bite, this film has a strange story line, and is also narrated by, not a minor character (the young girl, Gere's character's sister) but not the main character. Badlands is even more hard hitting, with its cold depictions of senseless murder, and has an amusing meta narrative on the media circus around murderers and man hunts. His later films are also excellent, if a bit more meditative.

Been having a kitchen sink drama mini fest. Saturday Night, sunday morning, A kind of Loving, and The Entertainer. Never paid too much much attention to this genre before, but they were brilliant.

Yes, it's a fine film. Not well known now and probably too grim for some, a bit like "In Cold Blood'.

Ols Sherlock day maybe... start with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 1939..




Lionel Atwill was originally cast as Prof. Moriarty, but was replaced before shooting by George Zucco. However, Atwill would go on to play Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942) also starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively.

The second film in the Sherlock Holmes series starring Basil Rathbone as the detective and Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson, and the last Sherlock Holmes film made at 20th Century-Fox. . This was set in 1894 London. All the subsequent films in the series were contemporary.

god that's a terrible film. I tried to watch it a while back as there's a connection to my family but I couldn't make it through to the end.

The Spider Woman, 1944..




At one point Holmes says to Watson, "If you ever see me getting too sure again, fancying myself more clever then Adrea Spedding, just whisper one word to me: pygmy." This line was inspired by the short story "The Adventure of the Yellow Face," in which Holmes tells Watson, "If it should ever strike you that I am getting a little over-confident in my powers, or giving less pains to a case than it deserves, kindly whisper 'Norbury' in my ear, and I shall be infinitely obliged to you."

Shooting lasted from May 10-early June, 1943, released January 21, 1944 (copyright 1943) .

Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, 1943..




References Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes story, "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual". The set which represents Musgrave Hall would be used in a few of the Universal horror films.

Dr. Watson's revolver is an 1878 Colt M1877 "Lightning", an improbable choice for Watson as a service revolver since it was never chambered with a British service cartridge.
