Ring of Spies, 1964...The film is based on the actual events of the Portland Spy Ring trial in the U.K.




45 Cranley Drive, Ruislip which features as the Krogers' home, was their actual address in real life, from which they transmitted messages to Moscow. A second transmitter was found at the bottom of the garden in 1980.

Towards the end of the film, an MI6 intelligence officer called Blake is told that the Portland spies are due to be arrested. He goes to Lord's Cricket Ground in order to warn his Soviet Russian contact, but is recognised by other MI6 officers. The character is based on George Blake of MI6 who did betray secrets to Soviet Russia. He was arrested the same year as the Portland spies.

According to the film, and what MI5 maintained, the Portland spy ring was unraveled solely through the vigilance of British counter-intelligence in shadowing Houghton, whose extravagance was itself the cause of his own downfall. However, something which was not public knowledge in Britain at the time the film was made and which the Russians maintain to be the real catalyst in the collapse of the spy ring, were the actions of Michael Goleniewski, a Polish triple agent who was passing secrets to the CIA from 1959, including information about the presence of a British spy within the Royal Navy. There is evidence that as early as June 1960 (at least six months before the demise of the spy ring) MI5 had been informed of Houghton's identity by the CIA thanks to their Polish informant. Yet it was not until January 1961 that Houghton and his associates were arrested - the same time that Goleniewski defected to the West. Surely this was no coincidence.

This movie marks the entry of the verb doodle (in the sense of absent-minded scribbling) into the English language. The word was coined for the movie by screenwriter Robert Riskin.

Jean Arthur was so overcome with stage fright that she often vomited before scenes and would run back to her dressing room after each take to have a good cry. Yet she was totally cool on camera. Gary Cooper was one of the few actors who could make her feel comfortable on the set.

Columbia and Frank Capra intended to make a sequel to this movie, starring Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur, entitled "Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington", based on the story "The Gentleman from Wyoming" (alternately called "The Gentleman from Montana" by both contemporary and modern sources) by Lewis R. Foster. This story was instead turned into the 1939 film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), directed by Frank Capra and starring Arthur and James Stewart.

The historical accuracy of the costumes and settings was overseen by the Smithsonian Institution. It's the first time the Institution ever worked directly on the production of a movie.

When teaching Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger how to shoot a muzzle-loading rifle, technical advisor Mark Baker gave them the advice to "aim small, miss small", meaning that if you aim at a man and miss, you miss the man, while if you aim at a button (for instance) and miss, you still hit the man. Gibson liked this bit advice so much, he incorporated it into the movie, just prior to the ambush scene. (which is true)

In an interview, Christian Bale spoke of the eccentric directing styles of Terrence Malick. He said that he wanted to see what Malick would do if he just walked out of a shot and towards the crew. Malick followed Christian with the camera and, as Christian put it, "[the crew] were running, and they were diving behind bushes to get away from the camera."

Because of Terrence Malick's habit of cutting and editing his films repeatedly, much of the music that James Horner wrote for the film never made it to the final cut, except for a few fragments. In an interview, Horner said that Malick loved his score, but had no clue about what to do with it. He concluded that working with Malick was "the most disappointing experience I've ever had with a man" and that "I never felt so letdown by a filmmaker in my life".

excellent version that. better than the shorter one i saw years ago. although some may say overly long, it did allow better characterization etc. i was a big fan of malicks earlier stuff. must pull out more... that was a bought file from Amazon.
