I don't watch or read any news at all and I've never been happier. The reality is that by global standards we live in paradise. The reality presented by the news media isn't actually the reality we individually exist in but if you are exposed to it on a regular basis then you start to think it is.

If you think that the news doesn't represent our reality, then you should go on Twitter. The culture war is raging on there! I do think however that everybody on the Northern Hemisphere, should all be protesting outside their parliaments, to try and avert the very real possibility of nuclear Amageddon, there's rather a lot of stake.

I remember in the 70s and 80s all those CND protestors marching everywhere, They never got rid of the nukes and there was never a nuclear war. Total waste of time which they could have used instead to get a bath, a shave and a haircut.

'Going on a demo.' It was what the earnest middle class kids at university did. Never accomplished anything. It's just lefty rite-of-passage thing.

The huge difference now is that there is a war on Russia's border, one in which Nato countries and are getting further embroiled in.

It's not really a 'War on Russia's border' is it? It's Russia invading a sovereign state. There's no credible excuse for that IMO. They thought they'd walk it and instead got their arses handed to them on a plate, and that was before any sort of aid or military assistance started coming in from the West.

Lots of parallels to their invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Lots of Western assistance to their enemy then too - the Afghan resistance weren't making their own weapons - It didn't result in WW3.

There are also parallels to Hitler's pre-WW2 'seizure' of the Czech Sudetenland to supposedly protect deprived ethnic Germans. Nobody pointed out that all nations were suffering from the depression and also deprived.

Yes, the Sudetenland where all the Czech defences were situated. Once he had that without a fight he could walk into the rest of the country.

My point was Russia and the Western powers have been fighting proxy wars since 1945, in Africa, Asia, Central America. Never resulted in WW3. It's what happens instead of WW3 - because none of the players want that.

If I lived in Russia, that is what I'd be doing. Even though Russia is the aggressor here, it is still a war on its border with Nato states supplying Ukraine with weaponry. I agree there is no legitimate or barely understandable reason why Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022, but this conflict stretches back much further, to 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. That was perfectly understandable, if not excusable, as Ukraine leased Russia the Sevastopol port for part of its naval fleet, and it risked losing that when a Western looking govt. replaced Yanukovych in the 'Euromaidan' coup. US interference in Ukraine, as in 2008 when Bush proffered Georgian/Ukrainian Nato membership is provocation, Nuland going to the Maidan in 2014 and handing out cookies is provocation. It may be those states 'right' to seek Nato membership, but the result is an alienating Russia lashing out.
