Been taking a look at 'Lost Gold of World War II' series on Blaze channel. It's The Curse of Oak Island all over again, a bunch of clueless blokes tramping about in the undergrowth on a Philippines island and drawing wrong conclusions left right and centre!

seen a couple of episodes of that, it's rubbish. At least on Oak Island they are always finding stuff. Okay so it's only pieces of wood and rusty bits of metal but at least it's something.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 1962...



O.Z. Whitehead, playing a teenager, was actually 50 years old. Denver Pyle played O.Z. Whitehead's father, despite being nine years younger than him.

Several reasons have been put forward for the film being in black and white. John Ford once claimed it added to the tension, but others involved with the production said Paramount was cutting costs, which was why the film was shot on sound stages at the studio. Without the budget restraints, Ford would have been in Monument Valley using Technicolor stock. It has also been suggested that since both John Wayne and James Stewart were playing characters 30 years younger than their actual age (Wayne was 54 when the movie was filmed in the autumn of 1961 and Stewart was 53), the movie needed to be in black and white because they would never have gotten away with it in color. The age difference was particularly noticeable in Stewart's case, since he was playing a young lawyer who had only just graduated from law school and had moved west without even practicing law back east. Cinematographer William H Clothier said, "There was one reason and one reason only ... Paramount was cutting costs. Otherwise, we would have been in Monument Valley or Brackettville and we would have had color stock. Ford had to accept those terms or not make the film."

John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn were both born in May 1907 (Hepburn the elder by two weeks), and their careers paralleled each other, yet this marked the only time the Hollywood veterans appeared together in a film. During filming, both 67-year-old stars stayed in Sunriver, and Governor Tom McCall flew in for a brief visit with them in early October.

In his review in The New York Times, Vincent Canby called the film "a high-class example of the low Hollywood art of recycling" and praised the performances by the two leads—Wayne for his continuation of his Oscar-winning role as Cogburn, and Hepburn for a performance that recalls her "marvelous characterization opposite Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen". Canby concluded that the film is "a cheerful, throwaway Western, featuring two stars of the grand tradition who respond to each other with verve that makes the years disappear."

Seen that a few times and the age thing had never occurred to me. Good film though.

Terrific British Sixties comedy! Lionel Jeffries is amazing as the paranoid screw .

A classic now with.... Once Upon a Time in the West, 1968...






When Henry Fonda was trying to decide whether to be in this film, he asked his friend Eli Wallach, who had just made The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) with Sergio Leone, if he should take the part of Frank. Wallach said that he had to do it and told Fonda, "You will have the time of your life." (Similarly, it was Fonda, saying he considered Leone one of the greatest directors he ever worked with, who persuaded James Coburn to take the part of Mallory in the second "Once Upon a Time..." film, A Fistful of Dynamite (1971).)

great little film that..

The Searchers, 1956...




Reportedly this film was seen in a theater in Texas by Buddy Holly and his friends in the summer of 1956. They were so impressed with Ethan's (John Wayne) repeated use of the phrase "That'll be the day" that they used it as the title for their now standard rock song, which they composed soon after.
