Fortunately I can still drink alcohol: beer, whisk(e)y, and wine. Obviously not in the quantities I used to be able to imbibe when I was younger; but if over a few hours, still quite a few units. Though I do have two or three days free of alcohol.

When out drinking with mates, it's beer (preferable real ale), but most of the time it's wine with a meal. I do drink whisky, but I know of a few single malts that I like; so whiskey is only an occasional nightcap, or very rarely an aperitif.

Nearly 12 months ago my younger brother started radiation treatment for an inoperable throat cancer, which buggered up his saliva glands, leading to a permanently dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, and will eventually cause tooth loss. But in April he finally got the 'all clear', got to ring the bell too.

Now it's back. I saw him a couple of days ago, he has a huge scar down the side of his neck, and is on a diet almost exclusively of porridge and soup. Whatever it is that was removed has left him with zero immunity, and to top it all he has to go through the chemo and radiation stuff again in January. He's a non smoking keen cyclist who doesn't drink or eat to excess. Largely the polar opposite to me, and yet... life can be cruel.

Thanks Geoff, fingers crossed. I'm going over later this week to chop a shitload of wood for his woodburner, but as I've caught some sort of non-covid lurgy I'll be keeping my distance.

That is such bad news Steve, I don't know what to say.
I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Thanks guys. He's facing a tough time, but he is a tough guy. Way tougher than me. And his partner is a nurse, which could be useful... All I can do is check on him periodically and offer help with anything that's going to push his physical abilities. I know from his last bout that he will be giving folk a wide berth, you can't risk taking Covid into a cancer ward for all kinds of reasons.

Sorry to hear about your brother, by chance I came across this article on the dangers of wood burning stoves.

Thanks Mike, I was already aware of this, and when I next speak to him I will mention it. But his house is huge and sprawling, with gas central heating. Woodburner only in one room, so he could live without it...
