Saw it at the cinema on it's release. At first I didn't like it as it seemed to make violence look 'chic'. But thought I ought to give it another go, and realised it was a Swiftian comment and satire about American society. Dry black humour with an out-of-sequence interacting character plot lines; following the late French film director Jean-luc Goddard's maxim that "a film should have a beginning, a middle, and an end - but not necessarily in that order".

I think Tarantino had that in mind when making Pulp Fiction

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, 1966..



In the 1960s, Hollywood still followed The Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 (a.k.a. The Hays Moral Code), especially with westerns. This movie broke many, if not most, of those standards. After it was released, Hollywood had to change its moral standards to compete with such foreign-made movies.

When the bridge is blown up, and Tuco and Blondie are hunkered down behind sandbags waiting for the explosion, Clint Eastwood's career came within two feet of ending prematurely. A fist-sized piece of rock shrapnel from the explosion slams into the sandbag right next to Eastwood's head (watch it in slow motion to see the rock flying in).

The three-man gunfight scene is called either a "Mexican standoff", or a truel. There are several mathematical papers covering the many complex outcomes of a truel. Other movies that use a truel are Inglourious Basterds (2009), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Escape From L.A. (1996).

Gregory Peck's summation speech, which runs for 6 minutes and 30 seconds, was nailed in a single take.

Official credited film debut of Robert Duvall, who had no dialogue.

The first scene that Gregory Peck shot showed him returning home from his character's law office while his children ran to greet him. Author Harper Lee was a guest on the set that day, and Peck noticed her crying after the scene was filmed. He asked Lee why she was crying, and she responded that Peck had looked just like her late father, the model for Atticus. Lee explained that Peck even had a little round stomach like her father's. "That's not a pot belly, Harper," Peck told her, "That's great acting."

Atticus Finch was modeled on Harper Lee's own father, Amasa "A.C." Lee, an attorney and Alabama state legislator whose 1923 defense of a black client partially inspired the novel's trial. Like Amasa Lee, the character of Atticus Finch was not only an attorney but also a state legislator and a widowed single father. Gregory Peck met with Amasa Lee, then 82 years old, and formed a strong bond with him. Unfortunately, Lee died while the movie was filming, so Harper gave Peck his watch and chain. Peck was wearing that same watch and chain at the Academy Award ceremony the following year, when he won the Oscar for Best Actor.

now, the 1954 version of 'An Inspector Calls'...




This is the 60th anniversary Bluray.

George Cole (Tram Conductor, uncredited) was a protege of Alastair Sim and they appeared in several films together.

In the stage play on which this film was based, the inspector's name was Goole. It was changed in the film to hide the twist at the end of the film when it becomes clear that the inspector does not really exist and is a figment of everyone's conscience(or was he?). We shall never know as the author took the secret to his grave.

indeed he was superb and that version of that story is great. as good as the new one is(watched the other day), i find this one hard to beat.
