Yeah the lard may have contributed, but it was probably more about quantity than quality of his meals. I'd say most foods are fine in moderation, including lard. Since foods went 'healthier' (low fat, low salt, sugar-free), we've never been such a nation of fatties.
When I was at primary school, each year had perhaps one kid who was notably heavier than the rest. These days it's maybe more like a third. I'd say my lardy childhood diet combined with being kicked out of the house each day to make my own fun was probably better than today's kids on their X Box all day while scoffing bags of crisps cooked in sunflower oil.
