On BBC 2 at 2.05pm this afternoon, 'The Ipcress File' 1965, with Michael Caine. Great cast and fine acting. Still a great movie!

I may settle down and watch that again.

This was originally supposed to be a Walter Matthau/Jack Lemmon movie with the role of Matt Douglas written for Matthau. However, due to illness, Matthau pulled out and was replaced by James Garner.

In his memoirs, Garner wrote that he enjoyed working with Lemmon but felt the director(Peter Segal) "was a self appointed genius who didn't know his ass from second base and Jack and I both knew it."

I watched it, despite already having it on DVD. It is a far closer depiction of the way MI5/6 worked in the '60, than the utter fantasy that is the James Bond franchise.

Another good depiction of the UK secret service is the George Smiley films made for the BBC, as well as 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sp...he_Cold_(film)).

Groundhog Day, 1993...



The film was not filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but actually in Woodstock, Illinois (just fifty miles from Bill Murray's hometown of Wilmette, Illinois). There is a small plaque that reads "Bill Murray stepped here" on the curb where Murray continually steps into a puddle. There is another plaque on the building wall at the corner that says "Ned's Corner" where Phil Connors was continually accosted by Ned Ryerson. During the Ned scene the sign for "Woodstock Jewelers" is clearly seen in the background.

In the course of the film, Phil Connors endures Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's five stages: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Harold Ramis: "Danny Rubin actually took Elisabeth Kübler-Ross as a model - her five stages of death and dying - and we used that as a template for Bill Murray's progress."

Tremors, 1990..




Kevin Bacon originally resented being in Tremors, only agreeing to do it because he needed money for his new marriage and upcoming newborn child. When the film was not financially successful, Bacon feared his career was over, and in following years would refuse to acknowledge the film's existence and even called it the "worst thing I ever did." However, Bacon would eventually come around to Tremors, calling the filming of Tremors to be "the single most fun time I've ever had making a movie in my entire career" in 2012, and later admitting in a 2020 interview "When I was making Tremors, I was very depressed and at a low-point in my life, and I kinda blamed Tremors for all that. I was bitter against it, I thought it was a career-killer...I never watch my movies more than once, some of my movies I've never even seen before and have no desire to, but I've watched Tremors a dozen times. I love it so much, and I spent years trying to capture the same energy we had on the set of Tremors. It's one of my favorite films of all time."

Although a vocal version of the theme sung by Boz Burrell was released as a single in the UK, many people believed the uncredited singer of the theme song was Jim Dale. However it was actually performed in the movie by Ray Pilgrim, the popular session singer, well known for his work for the Woolworths-owned Embassy label.

Harry H. Corbett was paid £12,000 for his role, the most a "Carry On: actor had ever been offered at that point.
