The role of Old Lodge Skins was initially offered to Marlon Brando, who turned it down. Other sources claim Arthur Penn's first choice for the role was Sir Laurence Olivier. When that didn't work out, Richard Boone was slated for the role. When Boone backed out at the last minute, Chief Dan George was given the part and earned an Oscar nomination.

Little Big Man was the name of an actual historical figure. He was a Native American, an Oglala Lakota, who was a fearless and respected warrior who fought under, and was rivals with, Crazy Horse. He also fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn, a battle which is depicted in this film.

Twelve paintings done for the film by John Decker were sent to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for exhibition in March of 1946.

Director Fritz Lang and three of the stars (Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea) also made the similarly themed The Woman in the Window (1944).

According to Ben Mankiewicz on TCM, when first released, local censor boards in New York, Milwaukee, and Atlanta banned this film entirely for being "licentious, profane, obscure, and contrary to the good order of the community".

Perfect Holmes in my view. I mean everything not just the acting. The costumes were a strong influence on my late teen fashion. Got a few funny looks in my rural market town on a night out [emoji23]

Not a bad series I agree.

I like to look for how they cover up modernity in the exterior shots. Usual trick for hiding white road markings and yellow lines is to smear a load of clay over them. Watched one the other day where they go to a boarding house and it had a coax TV cable running up the outside wall.

And no doubt they were all grown for the part bar. one. I can imagine the producer saying, "right guys, go away and grow your taches, and we'll meet up here in two months' time. Sam, you can start Monday"
