The story takes place during the French intervention in Mexico from 1861 to 1867. Dynamite was invented in 1867 by Nobel, yet it was not easily available in the US until at least 1868. A common error in westerns..... and.... The French did not celebrate Bastille Day, the 14 July, until 1880.... oh and .... In the tunnel scenes, Hogan and friends are using hand-held carbide lamps. Carbide was not produced in any quantity until 1892, and carbide lamps were not invented until several years later.

It was followed by four other Holmes pastiches by Meyer, The West End Horror (1976), The Canary Trainer (1993), The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols (2019) and The Return of the Pharaoh (2021) [2] none of which have been adapted to film.

Think I have seen the film. Nicol Williams was a fine actor.

What errors were made? - I'm sure there were some.

The German general demands that scopolamine be used to interrogate the prisoner left behind by the group. However, while scopolamine was documented in 1881 it did not come into commercial or widespread use until 1947, two years after WWII ended. Additionally, it was not known to be a truth serum drug until the early 1950s.

The map featured near beginning of the film is a map showing the post war position with territorial boundaries of Germany and Poland that were not made and recognized until well after 1945.

and in the 7%... Freud accuses Holmes of being "egocentric." However, the use of the term ego (Latin for "I") was not used by Freud until the 1920 and the psychological adjective "egocentricity" did not exist until after Freud established the concept of the ego, id and superego in his paper "The Ego and the Id" in 1923.

When filming began, Robert Mitchum worried that Deborah Kerr would be like the prim characters she frequently played. However, after she swore at director John Huston during one take, Mitchum, who was in the water, almost drowned laughing. The two stars went on to have an enduring friendship which lasted until Mitchum's death in 1997.

Robert Mitchum is shown throughout the movie wearing a metal expansion bracelet for his wristwatch. Such bracelets were introduced by Speidel in the 1950s afaik. lol
