“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Well it ain't going in my skip, lowering the tone of the place...

Here's a rather strange and hard to believe skip related story:

Last week my next door neighbour asked if he could chuck an old telly in my skip, save him a trip to the tip, Course he could, I said. We get on great - I get his read "What Hifi" and "Hifi Choice" mags, and he gets my Which? magazine

But then a few days later he got an email from Amazon acknowledging some films he'd rented through his Prime Video account. Which he hadn't. Turns out the order had been made via his TV (the one in my skip, which has since mysteriously vanished!) Amazon recognised this scam as a thing that is happening these days, and waived the invoice.

There seems to be no limit to the resourcefulness and bare faced cheek of modern-day scumbags.

He must be made of money if he can just skip a working telly.

I was imagining it was one of those old wooden cased things from the 1970s not a modern smart TV.

Round here all they chuck out is really crappy Argos furniture and old mattresses. If you look in the entries there'll always be at least two mattresses.

Soon they'll become so advanced that they will be able to steal your DNA off the mattress and clone another you.

Anyways in 30 odd years living round here I've never once seen anything in a skip that was worth anything.

My mate in London finds valuable antiques just lying by the kerb, on a regular basis this is. He found a fire surround once, got three hundred for it.

If someone could clone me I'd certainly have a copy - I could send it out to work while I get to stay home and play me records.
