How's it going?

Bit knackered due to not getting a good night's sleep - nose not a problem in bed, as it's had 63 years of my farts so it's a tough old thing. But the patch behind my ear, where they took some skin for a graft, doesn't like resting on the pillow.

Working is pretty much normal, except that whenever I bend down to tie my laces or something, my nose throbs in tune with my pulse. Which is a bit shit. Also the right nostril is so swollen I can't get my little finger up there. I'll have to start blowing my nose, like a posh person...

Otherwise all good! Customers are providing sympathy biscuits with my brew, which is nice

This may end up being a ramble so apologies in advance... I lost my Mum before Christmas (when I say “lost”, I don’t mean she slipped down the back of the sofa, she passed away) but one of the positives is that me and my (younger) sister who had drifted apart are back in touch. We were reminiscing about our childhood, and one of the things we remembered was when I was about 11 or 12 my mum and dad (who were rather bohemian) used to run a craft stall on Saturdays in the cloisters at St Andrews Hall in Norwich. We used to get bored...

So money was tight, but the nearby “Cinema City” used to show old films for next to nothing, so I’d drag her there to see “Jason and the Argonauts”, “Great Expectations” and other classics.

Another very cheap waste of time not far away was the Bridewell Museum, and I remembered three things from last going there about 40 years ago. A huge model plane from the First World War (I suspect it was built by Boulton and Paul, a Norwich engineering firm pressed into aircraft manufacturing) a large collection of old shoes (Norwich being at the pinnacle of shoe manufacture for centuries) and a huge case of stuffed canaries. (As in taxidermy of little yellow birds.)

Well, my kids, now roughly the same age as we would have been at the time decided after this dinner table conversation that they would like to go. So today, it being half-term, we trundled up the A140 and spent a couple of hours wandering around what is now called The Museum of Norwich at The Bridewell and it was thoroughly enjoyable, for them too!

I was curious if the items I remembered would still be there, and was very pleased to find the model WW1 aircraft first, although a bit like Wagon Wheels, it was half the size I remembered it being in about 1980... plenty of shoes on display, too. And finally, a handful of stuffed canaries in the Norwich City FC display at the end of the tour (and yes, the irony of the Canaries being stuffed isn’t lost...)

Finally to the point(?) of my post... When I used to take my sister 40 years ago, admission for a child was 5p. Today, a child ticket was £6.20... According to an inflation calculator, the equivalent price today should be 23p - so it’s time to stop moaning about the price of gas, petrol and electricity and seriously question the robbing bastards in the museum services! I’m starting a petition and writing a very strongly worded letter...

Kids are so expensive these days, I couldn't afford one. Time was you could kick them out of the house in the morning, and off they'd go to the woods to try out their latest home-made weapons. These days you have to take them somewhere, somewhere that costs.

Having said that, £6.20 for a child ticket is just wrong. It would be acceptable if you were able to leave the kids there for the day while you go off drinking beer, but I bet you're supposed to stay with them, and pay even more for the privilege.

The Harris museum in Preston was always free, and probably still is. But then they won't have a box of dead canaries, and maintaining them won't be cheep [groan].

Sorry to hear about your mum Alex, but good that you and your sister have re-connected. Same thing happened with me and my brother after my mum's passing. That was 20 years ago and we are still in regular touch with each other.

Putin knows exactly what he is doing.

Nobody will do anything about his imperialistic stunts, all you'll get is a load of hot air and empty rhetoric from Boris and the rest including US.

He could hold the whole of western Europe to ransom, including us, under threat of nuclear attack and nobody would resist. The yanks would do nothing useful, they might make things worse though.
