I can foresee a time when you will pay per mile travelled, There will be a very modest car tax (paid per annum, irrespective of engine type or capacity), thereafter you will pay per mile. It might no be popular but it is something that will suit those who do not drive a lot (I'm included in that group).

True it may not be popular, but I've long thought it to be a more cost efficient and equitable way to collect revenue from drivers. Even though it would probably work out more expensive for me.

I have thought for years that car tax should be only the revenue collected on fuel sales - fairest way of relating road usage to taxation in my opinion

I agree. Easy to implement for liquid fuel, but more difficult for electric vehicles, though no doubt it could be done if the car is charged overnight and uses a separate meter.

inclined to think its gonna be on mileage. you will likely get a free allowance then pay on increasing levels. ice vehicles will no doubt pay more, and the poorer mileage you get the more you pay etc.
