I love the Tom Sharpe books. Most of which gave been successfully adapted to TV ('Blott on the Landscape' and 'Porterhouse Blue') and film ('Wilt').

Would love to see an adaptation of the South Africa series of books, though these days that might be difficult given the current 'woke' and PC sensibilities.

Watched a documentary the other night, Victorian Walks in Liverpool. Thought it might be interesting, lots of fascinating Victorian buildings in Liverpool. Of course it wasn't 5 minutes in before we were on to slavery. The whole thing presented in sub - 'Blue Peter Special' style with numerous factual inaccuracies. Couldn't make it through.

Watched another doc about London's Bridges. Waterloo Bridge. How would you possibly get racism into that? Well they managed it. Bridge is named after the battle and apparently there was a soldier from Jamaica in the British forces there.

Racism? He didn't get an invite to the opening of the bridge. Disregarding that there were 40,000 troops at that battle and none of them got invited either.

And although they had his birth certificate there was nothing to indicate on it that he was a black man. In fact it's highly improbable that a black man was serving with the British in the European theatre in 1815. I think they were just too thick to realise that white people got born in Jamaica too.

modern docu's and tv shows; even films are becoming too woke now. and far too much critism of say the 19th c attitudes.. they were 19thc attitudes ffs, not todays, but they are still relevent as to the time the depict. its history folks, warts and all.

im a great lover of flashman novels; yes they are racist, yes they are sexist, but them were the times, and tbh still are, just folk like to think they are better.

To Have and Have Not, 1944... watched it recently but its a good un... don't make em like this no more






In her autobiography, Lauren Bacall described what she called Hawks's "brilliantly creative work method" on set. She described that every morning on set, Hawks would sit with Bacall, Bogart, and whoever else was in the scene in chairs in a circle as a script girl read the scene. After reading through the scene, Hawks would add sexual dialogue and innuendo between Bacall and Bogart. After Hawks and Bogart felt the changes were adequate, Hawks would add one light on the set and they would go through the scene. Hawks would encourage them to move freely and do what felt comfortable for them. After going through the scenes a few times, cinematographer Sidney Hickox would discuss camera set ups with Hawks.

According to biographer Todd McCarthy, To Have and Have Not is a quintessential Hawks film. It contains classic Hawksian characters such as the strong male and his female counterpart. He also states that although elements of Hemingway, Faulkner, and Casablanca can be found in the film, it represents Hawks's capacity for expression, claiming it is, "beyond doubt, exactly the work its director intended it to be, and would have been nothing like this in the hands of anyone else."

i mean, walter brennan was a co star.... yet he won 3 academy awards...

The re-shot, re-edited and revised The Big Sleep was released on 23 August 1946. The cinematic release is regarded as more successful than the 1945 pre-release version, even though it is difficult to follow. Audiences' difficulty in following this version of the film may be due in part to the omission of a long conversation between Marlowe and the Los Angeles District Attorney where the facts of the case, thus far, are laid out. Yet some film critics prefer the 1946 version because they consider the Bogart-Bacall appearances more important than a well-told story. For an example of this point of view, see Roger Ebert's The Great Movies essay on the film. According to Warner Bros records the film earned $3,493,000 domestically and $1,375,000 foreign.

its certainly about as good, partly due to the Bogey/Bacall magic, and Brennan at his best. Story isnt quite as good tho

One of my all-time favourite films that. No idea how many times I've watched it. Must have read the book half a dozen times as well.

All about characters and atmosphere, the plot is just a vehicle. Even Chandler said he didn't know how all the loose ends tie up.
