I'm not at all interested in 'slasher movies'. When I watch horror films I prefer subtly over in-your-face schlock horror. The Japanese are masters in making subtle but nonetheless shocking horror films.

Of the revenge horror films, most of them are just too ridiculous (such as 'Kill Bill') to be taken seriously, or are of the 'torture porn' variety (such as the 'Hostel' trilogy) which are just downright unpleasant to watch and makes you wonder the intentions of the film maker.

But if you do want a revenge horror film which shows some imagination, then I would recommend the 2010 remake of 'I Spit on Your Grave': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Spit...ve_(2010_film)

It wouldn't be as effective if a kid was only thrown across a normal sized council house living room.

All just entertaining hokum after all, first time I've watched these kind of films in years and enjoyed them.

I'm fine with a bit of artistic licence, it's just that the inside the house seems to be some sort of odd amalgam of a British 1930s semi and a much larger American house. Like the sets were designed by an American who only had a little knowledge of what those houses are actually like inside.

LOL... I don't mind that stuff mate, it's the mind-numbingly awful 'Carry On' films, or anything of a similar ilk, which for me are dreadfully dated and old hat, that drives me demented!

That sort of 'humour' was never my thing (same with Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum - all that cack). Anything 'typically British' (read as English, really, from that era). For that reason I can only take Black Adder in small doses, too - despite the brilliance of some of the characters.

One of the reasons I like Carry On is that it's set back in the time when the world was still normal. Same with 'On The Buses'

I don't necessarily disagree, Barry (and I love ISoYG), but I watch 'gory' films (the more deranged the better) because I find them FUNNY!

Plus, I'm very much a 'film noir' kind of guy in general, which covers a broad spectrum of material. I don't do 'cheery' - period!

Yeah I know what you mean, but that's the only reason I'd be watching it!

I TOTALLY get where you're coming from with 'when the world was normal', and agree, as I'm also fundamentally non-PC. 'On the Buses' was ok. It had a few giggles, but most of that stuff (Love thy Neighbour too, etc) wasn't really my thing.

Now, The Kenny Everett TV Show or Not the Nine O'Clock News, different kettle of fish!

The Halfway House, 1944. Great period cast for this slightly supernatural drama. Directed by Basil Dearden and starring Mervyn Johns, his daughter Glynis Johns, Tom Walls and Françoise Rosay.









The Huffington Post reviewer disagreed, writing "I really can't recommend The Halfway House enough: unlike the more overt Ealing war films (which this resembles in many ways, not least the disparate group coming together and working together), this is subtler propaganda, and its overarching supernatural atmosphere is well done. Apart from that, however, it offers strong character portraits, great visual flourishes, and another solid turn from [Mervyn] Johns."
