i usually set sat nav if going somewhere unusual or more distant, even if i know the rd. i usually have sound off etc but as you say if it looks like an issue appearing it can often get me round it. i also check traffic on rds im going to use to see if there are any issues before i leave

It’s funny but that’s precisely what I tend to use a satnav for.

Sure, but it's a bit different from what I meant.

What I meant was if you were stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway, crawling along and getting nowhere fast, and if someone who's with you had a map (and Del's sense of direction is good), then they can have a look to see if coming off at the next exit (when reached) would take you to where you needed to go, albeit via a detour, rather than sitting in the traffic jam.

How would you do that with a sat-nav?

When we’re going somewhere new, I research the route and commit it to memory (as, bless her, Ursula’s sense of direction is hopeless!) and might use the satnav for the very last bit of the journey to the destination if I’ve not been there before.

Wow, big respect to Mr Memory Man! So if you were coming to visit us in Wrexham, from your place, you'd be able to remember how to get here, simply by looking at the route once? I'm impressed

Yes I agree, sometimes it can. We've certainly found it very useful when we've been abroad, especially finding things like Catholic churches in the middle of France! However, in certain circumstances there's nothing to beat having a full-sized map open in front you, showing your immediate area in great detail. We never go abroad without several

well you can zoom out but agree at times a paper map is best, especially if youve a co pilot. legally if you look at map even stopped its a offence unless you turn ignition off. some of the laws are bloody silly and you wouldnt get away with them in any other field. but motorists are fair game for govts

Yeah mate, but ultimately you're restricted by looking at a tiny screen, which is no match for a full-sized map. In that respect, there's only so much you can zoom in and out, especially in terms of getting your bearings, if the area you're in is totally unknown to you.

These days I rarely embark on long journeys to unknown destinations alone, so Del's there to assist me, as a handy and very capable co-pilot

car has ice on it this morning. the battery issues may start again with this.. it goes for a mot next week as its approaching 3 yrs old. ive noticed of late that the mpg has dropped due to colder weather too. about 53 at moment.

In terms of the bit in bold, yup, although if I send her in somewhere to ask for directions, particularly if there are a lot of men around, she can sometimes act as an unwanted distraction

I've got a bank account and a smartphone but there's no connection between the two.

They used to keep asking me to go on internet banking but the way I see it I never needed that facility before so why would I need it now? Just makes things more complicated for no real purpose.

When I got lost going for my covid jab I was able to bring up streetmap on the 'phone and find my way there. Now that's a useful facility worth having even if it's only needed once in a blue moon. Imagine having to ask passers-by for directions? No man wants to have to resort to that.

Real blokes don't EVER ask for directions. My balls are shrinking just thinking about it.

yup it doesnt seem like 3 years. i think the pandemic has shortened our lives
