“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    Grant's right. I should know!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

While enjoying my mid-month bath a couple of weeks ago, making bubbles (and understanding why women like to have scented candles on the go) I heard a strange rustling sound, which came in one-second bursts, a few seconds apart. Is it the plumbing? I tried turning on and off the cold water, then the hot water taps. The sound persisted. Is it the extractor fan packing up? I stood and put my ear to it. Not that.

Is it the boiler, which is in the next room? Didn't seem to be that either The sound was so brief that I really couldn't pinpoint it.

Only thing I could think of then was perhaps a mouse in the wall cavity. As I went round the skirtings untowelled and dripping (not a good look), the sound suddenly changed from rustling to "Ba-by shark! du-du-dudududu, baby shark..." mystery solved, a bath toy that only works when in water, must also like steamy bathrooms, and hiding among the bath towels

    Bloody grandkids.

That's thirty seconds of your life you won't get back

That reminds me of the time when I was at my cousin's house and was left alone in their living room. They had young children and there's toys all over including this massive 'Barney' dinosaur. Although I'd never heard of or seen of the 'Barney' line of toys before at that time.

Anyway I'm sat there looking out the window and it just started speaking. Christ did it give me a shock.

It would be a shock - we came from a simpler time when dinosaurs didn't talk. Which is why we're normal, while kids are all growing up mental.

The only dinosaur we knew was Godzilla and he never said a peep.

I suppose even if he had talked it would all have been in Japanese anyway.

Being Japanese, it really should have been able to talk.

Couldn't get that to work. Perhaps if I was Japanese...
