Stick with wild west and this Sydney Pollack film from 1972.. Jeramiah Johnston. Robert Redford in title role. Will Geer, Allyn Ann McLerie, Stefan Gierasch, Charles Tyner and Delle Bolton fill out cast.





Based loosely on a real mountain man of name John Johnson. He changed his name to that after deserting during the Mexican–American War after striking an officer, when he served aboard a fighting ship, having enlisted under a false age.

Rumors, legends, and campfire tales about Johnson abound. Perhaps chief among them is that in 1847, his wife, a member of the Flathead American Indian tribe, was killed by a young Crow brave and his fellow hunters, which prompted Johnson to embark on a vendetta against the tribe. According to historian Andrew Mehane Southerland, "He supposedly killed and scalped more than 300 Crow Indians and then devoured their livers" to avenge the death of his wife, and "As his reputation and collection of scalps grew, Johnson became an object of fear."
The story here is changed somewhat.

Farewell My Lovely (1975)

Robert Mitchum is private investigator Philip Marlowe, hired to find the missing girlfriend of a bank robber who has just been released from prison. This is adapated from a Raymond Chandler novel so inevitably the task is massively more complicated than it seems.

The 1941 period setting is well done, partly helped by the fact that in 1975 you could still find locations that hadn't substantially changed since 1941. Mitchum is good which doesn't really need saying, as is Jack O'Halloran as bank robber 'Moose' Malloy, but the film feels a bit constrained, not enough time is spent establishing and developing the characters and the atmosphere, two things which are really essential to do justice to any Chandler novel.

Not to say it isn't worth a watch as it gets a lot right, it's just a shame another 10 percent of effort wasn't put in and it could have been a classic.

I don't know why Tarantino doesn't have a go at a Chandler story, I have the feeling that he would know exactly how to do it justice.

Mitchum's recollections of making the picture are highly amusing and sound a lot like Chandler's dialogue:

The producer, Elliott Kastner, comes by with Sir Lew Grade, the British tycoon. He has a black suit, a black tie, a white shirt and a whiter face. 'I know nothing about motion pictures,' Sir Lew says. 'What I know is entertainment: Ferris wheels, pony rides.' I suggested we buy up the rights to Murder, My Sweet with Dick Powell, re-release it and go to the beach.

But, no, they hired a director, Dick Richards, so nervous he can't hold his legs still. They have all the hide rubbed off them, He started doing TV commercials. He was accustomed to, you know, start the camera, expose 120 feet of film and tell somebody to move the beer bottle half an inch clockwise. He does the same thing with people.

Mitchum called O'Halloran "One great find on this picture. At least, he's a find if we can ever find him again... They hired him for $500 a week. He looked perfect for the part. One time he hit the producer. One of the producers. We had seven of them. We called them the Magnificent Seven. Jack was swinging this poor bastard around his head like an Indian war club.

I tried to explain to him: 'The guy can be talked to, Jack.' He shakes his head. 'Mitch,' he says, 'I was crying too hard.'"

''Charlotte Rampling arrived with an odd entourage, two husbands or something. Or they were friends and she married one of them and he grew a mustache and butched up. She kept exercising her mouth like she was trying to swallow her ear. I played her on the right side because she had two great big blackheads on her left ear, and I was afraid they'd spring out and lodge on my lip."

Watched that last week. It's OK, but not one of Eastwood's best. Some good 'baddie' actors in it, I always found John Saxon irritatingly unconvincing. Duvall and Don Stroud were excellent as usual.

saxon, yeah. he mostly worked in italy i think. was in that bruce lee film too

Film Noir this morning i think, and where better to start than Key Largo, 1948. Directed by: John Huston and stars Humphrey Bogart , Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor and Edward G. Robinson.





The script was adapted from a 1939 play of the same name by Maxwell Anderson. In the play, the gangsters are Mexican bandidos, the war in question is the Spanish Civil War, and McCloud is a disgraced deserter who dies at the end.

Robinson had top billing over Bogart in their four previous films together: Bullets or Ballots (1936), Kid Galahad (1937), The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938) and Brother Orchid (1940), but the situation switched for the billing in this final film that Bogart and Robinson worked together on.
