Dylan and Mitchell, are they really folk music? I suppose early Dylan is but even then it's American Folk. Actually I've only got one Dylan album, Blonde on Blonde.

Not into John Martyn although I think I have Solid Air somewhere. Only got a bit of ambient/electronic, find it a bit boring, wallpaper music. Classical I tried but I can't get into it.

Got some valuable vinyl but only because I was still buying new releases on vinyl well into the 1990s and they have become rare now as not many were pressed. I'll be selling that at some point.

A lot of my listening is to the same music I was into in my teens and twenties. Not making any excuses for that, it's about quality over quantity and 95% of modern (post 2000) popular music is either shite or derivative.

Main area I explore new (to me) stuff is Jazz now.

In your humble opinion, of course! Many others and myself would disagree! Although, some of the vacuous chart shite certainly comes into that category.

It's hard to accurately pigeonhole some music into a genre, but I'd say the vast amount of Joni M's output would be filed under either singer/songwriter or folk - but as Grant's pointed out, not the folk you're talking about, which isn't my bag either!

I can get 'nostalgic' too, with all the stuff I grew up with in the 80s - and I have shedloads of it, especially on 12" singles, but I only hit that stuff occasionally when I'm in the mood; and when I'm in the mood nothing else will do

Otherwise though, it'll be anything but that. Yup, jazz is a massively diverse and interesting genre. I like some trad stuff, but am probably more at home with the 'alternative' variety, not just the old boys like Sun Ra and Charlie Mingus, but some of the new 'trippy shit' the youngsters are coming up with. I apply the same rule to music as I do to art. That is, if I could have made it then it's shite.

The problem today is there's no gatekeepers, anyone can call themselves a musician and put out music, so if there is any good stuff it's lost in the vast amount of complete crap.

there never really was tho; it was just someone thought they could make money out of you. some they did, some they didn't. Lots of crap in 60's and 70's too. I think what you can say now is there is a bigger field of genres available now as its not so much up to studios as to who gets to make records.

As for your latter point, see what Grant says. I think the fact that making music and selling it now is much more accessible, especially with often no middlemen to factor in for their slurp, is a great thing. Some of the music kids are making these days, with little more than a laptop, is quite incredible, especially with electronica, but I know you don't dig that.

I play guitar and keyboard. I'm not any good but I can play. I could knock something up of a standard to what you linked to previously in an hour or so.

I agree that anyone being able to make music and release it is a great thing, it's just a shame that there's too many doing it who have zero talent.
